Center Exhaust?
Hi Everyone,
I was wondering what time period or which car models had a center exhaust pipe? Mine currently has the central system but it looks like other 59/60 cars had a side exit. Also my car is a little smelling when driving and I've heard that the center exhaust might be to blame.
Additionally are there any places to get a side exit exhaust with a kink for the floor starter?
Thanks everyone!

I always understood that stock exhausts are side exit. The rally boys use centre exits as it allows you to tuck the box up higher under the subbie to gain clearnace
I've got a 69 Mini with a 1046, Cooper Head and a four on the floor.

Re: Center Exhaust?
have a word with Maniflow. They seem to know their stuff and will probably be able to advise on a standard original fitting....

Re: Center Exhaust?
No Mini was ever produced between 1959 & 2000 & whenever they finished with a centre exit exhaust as standard, you don't need to ask Maniflow that question.
Centre exit systems are available, but ALL these are after market jobbies. And these almost universally dump soot up the back of the car & make the interior smell of exhaust fumes because the exhaust pipe finishes in a low pressure spot where the fumes & filth are drawn up the back of the car. Centre exits work well, but have serious practical drawbacks.

Somerford will modify a GEX 106 to clear the floor start. Can't remember now but I think it's about £25 extra.roxorboxor wrote:

as per the previous post
clearance is the reason, get the can up into the frame so it doesn't get knocked off

Re: Center Exhaust?
centre exhausts where a race/rally thing as they cut down on a bit of weight, made a bit more power and more importantly, if someone rammed you / or you reversed into something, the exhaust wouldn't kink on the bends and fold shut, so you had a greater chance of continuing
this is why, in part, the ends of them point up, as you don't get mud in them when you are rallying if you reverse into a bank

and it is looking a bit more agressive - very important for each racecar. Btw, some workscars used the centre exhaust, therefore one could not say that this was not done by the factory.

When I wrote that yesterday I knew that some smart arse would come up with that suggestion
I am only surprised that it took nearly 24 hours

Apart from the Innocenti Mini Cooper 1300 Export of course

And for those with the heaviest of anoraks it is part number AXE422 with trim piece AXE423.

I thought the works cars were built in the competition department at Abingdon, not in the Longbridge or Oxford factoriesAstro wrote: Btw, some workscars used the centre exhaust, therefore one could not say that this was not done by the factory.
