Wiper switch wiring

Post by tedmcedd »

Right.

I'm trying to wire some 2 speed wipers from a twin stalk column to a toggle switch...

Looking in the haynes, there is a diagram for a 2 speed option on the cooper S and GT etc. Would I be able to use a lucas headlamp 2 position switch to do this? or was it a specific switch for wipers??

Anyone done this!?

When you switch the wipers "off", you are actually switching the
power from "slow" to "park", so a headlamp switch will not work...

When it is switched to "park", the motor keeps going until the
"ramp switch" in the motor itself turns it off. This switch also
shorts the two sides of the motor together which causes it
to stop abruptly and not run on-and-on etc.

It could be made to work with a relay, but if you have the correct
switch, things are easier.

I have done this with a Lucas toggle switch and no relay on one
of my cars. Unfortunately it has since been "undone"...

Does this help?

A MK 3 Mini owner I know has a 2 speed wiper in his car and he is adamant it is as it left the factory. He's on the look out for a new switch, 2 speed, because his is kaput.
I reckon the switch he needs would have been used on a Leyland vehicle of the same age. MGB perhaps.?

Yes,

I have just bought this:

Hopefully I will be able to work it out with the diagram above!

It shows in the haynes as an option on the wiring diagram, as does hazards!

As above, you need a 2-speed wiper switch. You can operate the 2-speed motor using an on-off-on toggle switch but the switch has to control two relays to make the circuit work. I wired such a setup last year on a budget race car. The schematic is online. See the link below.

Hi
the 2 speed wiper switch available is BMC part number BHA4786 , used in the MGB's.
You could use a lights switch, but you would have to train a bit at parking the wipers :)
