Re: Magic Wand gearbox strength
Piece of cake.
1275 block, about 1/4" machined off the top. This is definitively ascertained by a dry build.
The SA crank drops straight into a standard non s 1275 block, you use perfectly normal 1300 pistons, normal 1275 style rods & off you go Vroom, Vroom!

Re: Magic Wand gearbox strength
its as basic as stripping a 1275, removing the crank, refitting the sa one, rebuilding it, measuring how far the pistons are down the bore, stripping the engine again, getting the block decked.goff wrote:Rich
Was is exactly involved in using the SA crank in the 1275 block ?????? , About what amount is removed from the deck and what pistons do you use, Infact talk us through it
Goff
nothing special is required, you just use which ever 1275 pistons you want to suit your application (although the cheap ones are a waste of time as your building an engine that will rev)
I normally use the minispares megas or the p21253 high comp ae ones.
obviously, as with any engine you can build it to suit your budget, my race car one has a fully worked crank that cost a stack of cash, my gtm has one that came straight out of a scrap sa engine, it didn't even need a regrind!
I love them!

Sorry for going OT here.
What the factory quoted Stroke on the South African 1100 Cranks?

that's a trick question..........Spider wrote:Sorry for going OT here.

they vary from 69.8 to 70mm, so just a little bigger than a 'proper' 1071

Re: Magic Wand gearbox strength
Please help this newbe here!
Sounds better then a tuned 998 or 1098!
I have a 1128 4 sync gearboc on my 850 and would like to upgrade to more power.
If I find a regular (non S) 1275 block, I can put this without any modifications on my gearbox?
Add the SA crankshaft (if I understand it correctly SA means South African or can I use any 1100 crankshaft?) and use the pistons and rods from the 1275.
Next dry deck the block.
What would be other good upgrades for a reliable weekend road driver?

Re: Magic Wand gearbox strength
jeb
will fit onto your box with no issues
the sa crank is unique to south Africa, its got nothing in common with the small bore 1098 engine
why bother the hassle of dry decking?
ive never had over heating or head gasket problems with any of my sa 1071 conversions
just use a decent 2 core and a dizzy with a good advance curve and it will be a beautiful engine
my 1430 in my er-cooper s feels like a fricking tractor engine compared to my 1071 (although the low down grunt is impressive!)

Re: Magic Wand gearbox strength
The 1275 Blocks usually fit the 22G1128 Gearboxes with no problem, though i have had a couple I've had to take the file to around where the bolts for the Main Bearing Cap nearest the flywheel would be.Jebo wrote:Please help this newbe here!Sounds better then a tuned 998 or 1098!

If it's for road use, why not stick with the 1275 crank? Fitting the 1100 crank will drop the capacity from 1275 cc to 1100 cc. And yes, the SA Crank talked about here is the South African one, quite different to the usual 1100 (small bore engine) crank.
For road / weekend worrier car, I wouldn't bother dry decking it. Just lighten up the bottom end, lighter flywheel etc, a decent (tried & tested) head and a cam to match, you'll be a good half way there.

Re: Magic Wand gearbox strength
Using a non-1275s block and SA crank,would it fit on a 22g68 ? I know you have to grind it out for a 1275 crank.Jebo wrote:Please help this newbe here!Sounds better then a tuned 998 or 1098!
