163 head - buy or stay away?

Post by abri »

I have a chance to buy this head. It has been skimmed a bit and slightly ported. There are no visible cracks between the valves but there are black burnt areas. I've been advised by a local ex BMC worker and experienced S racer that I should stay away from it unless I can get it really cheaply. His reason was that some "arsehole" (as he put it) has gone and cut the valve seats at angles removing meat where there already is very little. Apparently the angles were virtually round when new and touched the equally round valve edge on a very small area.

Opinions on this advice and on the head itself would be much appreciated. I know its hard to say from pics.

The only really bad bit that I could see is a chip in the very thin area between two of the valves. This raised alarm bells obviously and unless this could be fixed I wouldn't take the head.

Bad part

The rest all look like this or better (but still very thin)

Be wise that said take the time to keep eyes open and not your wallet.
163 heads are still available. The funds would be better spent than on a gamble and that head will need some money to make it usefull. They do pop up more frequently than you may think. ;)

I wouldn't buy that one. The seat have been cut FAR too deep & would be near impossible to make respectable again.
