Nice Nuts

I am trying to find some stainless steel wheel nuts, the original
type with the round base.

The closest I have found are chrome but have a massive plain
dome on the top, appearing to be there purely for the purpose
of reducing socket engagement...

If I can't get stainless, then chrome will have to do, but these
would need to be a sensible shape.

Any pointers would be most welcome as the 30 year old chrome
nuts on my Mini-Marcos are now starting to look rather tatty.

If they don't have what you might be after, there are a few custom wheel nut manufaturers about and from what I've seen, they generally don't seem to charge much more than off the shelf items. Just check the grade of stainless though as there are only few grades that are suitable for use as wheel nuts.

Thanks, that's great - it's given me a good starting point!

I'll have to contact the seller and ask what shape the seats are
on those domed ones. It looks like all the photos are of the
same type, which is the 60 degree later Mini type.

I may be able to get these and re-profile them in a lathe, if they are
not quite right. I might be able to "de-dome" them slightly as well!

Spider : Being not able to tell the difference between cheese and
proper metal, can you give me a hint about the types of stainless
that would be suitable. I have heard of A2/A4 for bolts, and T302
for pipe...

Ha, sorry, yes, I should have posted that info!

304 is a common one that would be suitable, however a 420 or 431 grade while probably a little harder to come by would be much better and in any event, some lube (copper coat) is advised on the thread. Many wheel nut manufacturers won't do them in 304 as it is very hard to machine and in particular tap a thread in to. Also, many stainless steels work harden and few have any tensile strength (ie, they don't stretch, only snap).

Some issues to keep in mind with Stainless (and even some rustless) Steels is electrolysis causing rusting / corrosion of adjoining parts (ie wheel rims and wheel studs) and another one is expansion rates when heated, remember that the front wheel nuts will get hot. I do recall many years back now a guy had some new flashy wheel nuts which worked loose when driving, he kept tightening them and once when tightened while hot, they did cause a wheel stud to snap later that night when they cooled, maybe the stud was on the way out? But they will usually break when you have a spanner on them, not hours after you park it up!

I'd aslo suggest googling 'stainless wheel nuts' to hear what some others have found from using them.

Thanks, but being a bit "thick", can you tell me is "Chrome" is the same as "Stainless Steel"?
Also, will the 12x1.5mm thread on the nut mate correctly with the 3/8"x24TPI thread of the stud?

...getting the right nuts and spacers can be a real pain !!! I tried a set of theirs to replace the orig ones on my orig d1,s did they fit ??? nah ! miles out !!! so I just refurbed the old ones....foxy52

...yes but if u compare the orig d1,s to the modern copies although good are not the same ..the wall lip is thicker for example.. but then its par for the course trying to get anything repro to match up with old or n o s.....foxy52

Anyway 100+ wheels have been around since at least the seventies, iirc they used to be the control wheel for the sevens and are very light. I've only ever seen 2 types on minis, they have all been 10x5 in a minilite style of course and some diamond cut 4 spokes.
