Rattles

Post by dgear1984 »

Hi,

I have read posts regarding remote gear change levers rattling and the cure although I cannot seem to find anything out it now. The remote on my mk1 has started to rattle, when travelling at a constant speed (I.e. Little load). Rattle goes away if you hold the lever.

The lever I have is the later chrome one with the rubber bush built in. I seems to remember the fix was using a bush from a Morris minor or something......

Heater has also started to rattle, only at idle. Was thinking about making up some av mounts for it, or would it be best to try using a rubber bush in the engine steady instead of poly before going to far?

Thanks Dave

assuming the stick slot and pin are ok it shouldnt
need much more than a new nylon bush and a good
dose of thick grease.
from memory the early solid sticks
had a spring and cup under the little
ball end and later nylon cups were used.

Thanks,

I will take a closer look when I get some spare time. Found the post, it was on the mcr forum and they say use a minor upper trunnion bush instead of the nylon cup.

Thanks Dave

Hi I have just joined the forum and just acquired a Mk 2 Cooper 1071cc Car. I am having the same problem, When i drove the car home after buying it the rattle became worse ( as things warmed up). It happens on the overrun when you lift off the throttle. I seem to remember a mini fix from years age , either a new spring or placing a washer/ bush above the spring to take up the slack/ware??

Classic cars have a whole load of rattles. It's natural.

Stop trying to make them like your mondeo!

There's a plastic or metal bullet-shaped fitting at the bottom of the lever that fits in a hole in the linkage. This fitting is loose in the hole in the linkage which causes the rattle. Wrap a layer aluminum from a soft drink can or beer can (you could drink the beer while you're working) around the fitting and your rattle will be history. I've spent countless hours fiddling with the linkage and this is the only solution that works. I give credit to this idea to Steve Gibbs aka Copper Tune Racing (CTR) on the Mini Mania message board. I used to have a picture of what to do, compliments of CTR, but I can't find it. My description should be self-defining.

BTW on the works race cars a heavy sleeve of some sort was put on the lever to stop the vibrating. You can see said sleeve in the top picture of page 50 in the book The Works Minis by Peter Browning.
