LHD Cooper S ?

Post by oldspa »

Dear All,

Pointed in your direction from the Mini Forum,

I am a noobie looking at a very banged about 1964 Mk 1 Cooper with FIA papers for appendix K.

It is LHD and is supposedly originally a 1071 'S' taken to 1290. I'm trying to determine if it is a genuine S. I think the shell is probably pre autumn '66 as it has the pop riveted brackets in the boot but the issue is if it is a genuine S as opposed to a 997/998 cooper with S mods.

I understand from John Parnell's excellent guide that on the S they moved the voltage regulator aft of the bracing strut on the inner wing to make way for the servo and turned it 90 degrees.

This car has no servo, could have been taken out for racing or did the LHD cars have no servo because the brake pedal was on the other side? Furthermore the regulator has not been turned 90 degrees.

I'd be interested if anybody else on here has a detail shot of a LHD Cooper S of around 1964 vintage to compare it with, please see below.

Whilst on the subject I wonder if it is worth any less as a LHD car? I'm quite at home driving LHD but the value is more of an issue. I expect it might be similar LHD/RHD as so much interest in cars for sale seems to be from abroad these days but I'd be interested to know what the consensus is in the mini world...

My car is a LHD June '64 Morris -S 1275. I don't know how much would have changed between your 1071 and when my car was built in late June.

I cannot post a direct link to where I have an online picture of my car's engine bay. Please see the link below and from there look for "engine compartment.jpg" under the Mini pictures tab.

Chuck Heleker has noticed a couple of weird things in my engine bay but it is largely original. The servo shown is the Mk1 replacement from Mini Spares but it is mounted where the original servo was in my car.

The picture does not include a good view of the regulator control box which is located under the upper bend in the large diameter fresh air hose. The control box is mounted on top of the horizontal bulkhead, not on the wing or stiffening bracket.

LHD or RHD it does not really matter but purists will want to keep it original.

December 1964 Mini Cooper 970S, not completely original but gives an idea. Converted to dry suspension:

1966 Mini Cooper 1275S shows more or less the same things (this one is still on hydrolastic suspension):

Thanks,

It's fair to say then that the box on my prospective car has been moved as it is at 90 degrees to the others so is not a clue to its identity.......

Agreed,

Your regulator box has probably been moved from the original 1070 position mounted on the top face of the cross member, not on the inner wing. However this doesn't really mean a whole lot. Many S's have been messed around with endlessly.

I would suggest you try & contact member Simon776 via PM who I am sure will be able to ask you a few salient questions about the FE number in particular & will probably be able to confirm exactly what your shell is.

I hope this helps.
