Chassis plates

I have seen early cars with forward stamped chassis plates but thought that later Mk1's onwards all had reverse stamped plates.

My Dad has just found the 'safely stored' chassis plate for his late 67 Mk2 and its forward stamped.

Is there a general rule for the different stamping technique ? Longbridge/Cowley/Austin/Morris ??

Thanks for your reply Dean but I was referring to the actual stamping of the chassis plate, forward & reverse stamping rather than the orientation of the plate to body.

Reverse stamping ( from back ) - Austin Longbridge.
Forward stamping ( from front ) - Morris Cowley

Interesting,

Dads car is an Austin and has a suffix 'M' at the end of the chassis number.

So does that means its a Cowley built Austin ?

My 59 has the chassis plate stamped in from the top (mirror imaged punches), but every chassis plate I've seen for cars later than that has letters that are proud (punched from behind).

Yes, my '60 Morris Mini has a forward stamped plate but all the others I've seen are reverse stamped.

Having said that, I think the plates on Dads MG Midgets are forward stamped.
