1965 Morris Mini - From NZ to the UK!
Hi everyone,
Just thought I'd share my 1965 Morris Mini, and in future I can update this thread with progress when I get around to doing various bits and pieces.
My plan is to upgrade the car to Cooper 'S' or similar spec, in keeping with the badging, colour scheme and trim which already make it look very much like a Cooper from the outside.
Today I'm getting 7.5" disc brakes fitted, which is my first big step into upgrading the car. So far since taking ownership, all I've really done is add and change a few bits here and there such as the bullet mirrors, the roof rack, and choke + throttle cables. I'm also planning to at some point fit a larger motor - I currently have a 1275 engine from an Austin 1300 sat in my garage, but I'm not sure I will use this engine yet; I also have the option of purchasing a genuine 970S engine which has been rebuilt and bored out to 1120cc, which sounds very tempting. However I think I'm going to do a bit more looking around first, and see if I could possibly get hold of another 1275 engine in better condition (mine would likely need a full rebuild).
Anyway here are some pictures I took of the car a few days ago, after repainting the black number plate bezel on the front:

Looks a lovely car. You mentioned you are able to get hold of a bored out 970s, I'd have that over a 1275 personally. Only thing is, if it is 1120cc it won't be using a 970s crank. Most likely a 1071s crank +60.

I'd love that engine but sadly it's just too far out of my reach at the moment in terms of cost. However I doubt it'll be sold any time soon, so I can still keep it in mind for the future. For now I've started taking apart the 1275 engine I have in my garage at the moment and it's actually in better condition than I thought at first - it might be a feasible option to rebuild/refresh that, and use it in my mini for the time being just to give me some more usable power (and reliability) as a daily driver.Oldskoolbaby wrote:Looks a lovely car. Bought a set of original Dunlop D1 wheels a couple of days ago, however I don't have the wheelnuts (yet) because the guy still has to dig them out of his shed and post them to me.
They're in pretty good nick and the tyres are great (2 are nearly brand new), but I'll be repainting the black to tidy them up a bit.

I swear on my Haynes manual that I looked at your pictures and thought - is that Auckland Bridge?, before scrolling down !

Wow, I didn't even realise how long it had been since I last updated this thread!
Since refurbing those Dunlop wheels, I sold them for a tidy profit and am now considering either some silver rose petals or a set of old english white Cooper S wheels. As nice as the Dunlops were, they just didn't seem to suit the Almond Green body, and they were also sticking out a little bit too far for my liking.
Also in other news, I'm just about to take out the wheezy 850 engine and replace it with a much livelier 1293. I managed to buy a Clubman with this fully rebuilt engine, for less than the price of rebuilding my other 1275 engine! So that's a good result, and the plan now is to swap my old 850 back into the Clubman so my sister can drive it around.
For now though, here's a couple of pictures of the "before" and "after" for the engine, which is nearly ready to swap in to the Mk1!
I'm not even sure if I have the leads on the right way, but I thought I'd chuck them on just for show! As well as most of the other stuff. (And by the way, yes I know I painted over the sparkplugs but these are going to be replaced anyway)

It's about time I made some decent progress on this little project, so yesterday I dedicated a good few hours to removing the 850 engine, swapping over ancillaries like the shiny radiator, cleaning bits up and getting the big engine ready to drop into the car. Hoping to have it fitted and drivable tonight!:D

I should probably add that the engine isn't quite as bright and vibrant as the picture makes it look, that's just how my phone camera made it show up My original plan was to do it in the old BMC green, but I've had trouble getting green engine paint at a reasonable price. In the end I settled on red, as I don't mind straying away from the standard factory look, and I'll be keeping the original 850 anyway should I ever decide to return the car to original.

I figured it's about time I posted another update! So the engine has been in for a few weeks now, with only a couple of issues along the way.
About a week after getting it going and having a Stage 1 kit fitted, it started running very poorly, and of course this had to happen at the most annoying of times; past midnight, in the pouring rain! I couldn't fix the problem after well over an hour of fettling under the cover of a petrol station, so I had no choice but to have her towed home and solve the problem in the morning. It was running, but so terribly that it just wasn't drivable (I was over 30km from home)
It sounded like a timing issue, so I swapped the distributor over for an identical unit which I knew was in good condition. This fixed the problem, but then a week afterwards, the same issue re-appeared! I then managed to narrow it down to the condenser, which for some reason was going faulty. I figured this might be because of the aftermarket coil I was using, so I swapped my standard Lucas coil from the old 850 engine back into the car, as well as a new condenser. I've been driving for just over a week now and it still seems to be running alright so hopefully that was the solution.
Apart from that, I've certainly been enjoying the extra performance of the big bore motor. It's nice to no longer be required to press the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor, in order to just climb a hill and barely maintain speed. The extra torque of this engine as opposed to the 850 really allows the mini to trundle along without maxing out the revs all the time, and keep up with modern traffic even on the motorway. I was never after a super high-performance speed machine, because I don't feel that's what the mini is all about, but the extra power and torque offered by the bigger engine has made it a lot more enjoyable to drive on a daily basis.
Now I've probably bored you lot with my wall of text, so here are a few pictures I took a few days ago while the sun was setting, I thought they turned out quite nicely
