Hello
i hope someone can point in the right order and direction to reclaim, re register my mk1, maybe someone who has been there and done it.
the car has been off the road for a long long time, i guess around the late 70's maybe early 80"s
the DLVA have no record as such on there computers as it was not on the road when they computerised everything around 1984 ish. so was not registered
i know the reg number is free and not on any other car
i have the heritage certificate for the car and all the number matches, engine numbers , key number, chassis numbers, body numbers ect.
i been told i will need someone to verify the car but only once its been rebuilt, ( which i am doing) i know its has to be someone from the MCR or BMC
but what are the steps.
1. finish rebuilding it,
2. ????
do i get it moted with the original reg number so there is a record on the computers
is there anything is should do which will help
i want to finish the car this year and have it ready for the IMM, its in about 3 and half months but i also know how slow the DVLA can be , is it worth having someone check it once it been painted and starting to reassemble , just something to speed it up
if anyone can help, point me in the right direction, right people to talk to. would be a great help
thanks dean

Dean,
Why don't you just go down to the DVLA office in Brighton and ask someone?
Far less chance of being fobbed off to your face than over the phone,
especially if you "be nice".
It's round the back of the railway station...
They have a deli-counter ticket/queuing system, so be prepared to wait.

To get your number back under the current V765 scheme you need some pre 1983 paperwork to go along with the car, old log book, MOT or tax discs plus any old photos of it as a complete car aswell will help. You need to be able to establish that the reg number belongs to the car, even a copy of the council registration records may help. Without any paperwork it can be difficult.Dean wrote: is there anything is should do which will help

Re: re claim my v5c
thanks for your replys , thats where there is a problem i have no old paper work,no mots tax disc etc.
i know the car was first registered in Kendal and have photo copy from the council that was taken from there records, it shows loads of reg numbers of cars and one of them being mine,
i do know that the car was originally bought by the round table, then i know nothing, up till 7 years ago when i bought it from a bloke in west London, he got it from a builder mate that was knocking down a house and the car was in a garage, he was not really into minis, and was just buying it as the reg number matched his initials and for and investment for his sons college, but decided to sell as he found the number would be not transferable, plus hassle to get the number
so from 62 till 2007 there is a big gap in history, someone had painted in a lovely!!!!! mk3 orange colour and painted the door cards black,
the only good thing is that the car had not been cut about, so all the body plates were on the floor, also stamped into the inner wing brace.FE plates are still present , locks and ignition barrel were still the same key number. and the original colour could still be seen in areas on the car. original engine still under the bonnet with its cone gearbox and engine number plate still present, wiper motor stamped 3/62, like i said still all matching to the heritage certificate
but this means nothing without proof, i know i can get this car registered, but it may end up being with a age related plate if i dont have enough proof / paper work, which would be a real shame,
i do not ever intending to ever sell this car, but would love to have its original number back were it belongs
EDIT: just done a bit of searching on the DVLAwebsite and found this in one of there pages
"17. You have an old vehicle which is not registered at DVLA. Can you register the vehicle and transfer or retain its registration number?
It is possible for you to register the vehicle at DVLA, but you will not be able to transfer or retain the registration number."
WTF

Re: re claim my v5c
All that means is that once you get he V5C back you can't take the number off either by transfer nor stick it on retention, it doesn't mean you can't have the original number back on the car.Dean wrote: EDIT: just done a bit of searching on the DVLAwebsite and found this in one of there pages

There's two things you have to establish to satisfy the DVLA criteria,:
1. That the car you have is physically the one it's supposed to be, and from the sounds of it you have a body number amongst others on the car so a big tick in that box.
2. That this car was once registered 'ABC 123', ie you need to tie this car in with that number by any means. this can include council registration records which sometimes carry both the registration number and chassis number together, old RF60 logbook, MOT, whatever old paperwork that contains both the chassis or body and the reg number.
Understandably the system has to work this way in order to stop people making cars from chassis numbers that could easily have been exported or scrapped prior to computerisation , you have to wonder how many works Minis (for example) would be in existence today had all the chassis numbers not been published in Browning's book !
