Dismantle Britax buckle for re-chrome

Post by NZmember »

Some time ago I see Cooperman sent his buckles off for re-chroming.
Can anyone advise me how they come apart? Especially how to take the little plastic sliders off the sides and removing/replacing the springs?

I am not aware of what Cooperman did with his belts. However, in all likelihood the belts you have are very old and need new webbing. There are firms that will re-web belts and (though I can hear lawyers mumbling as I type) you can replace the webbing yourself if you have the right nylon thread and a heavy sewing machine. My point is that you should probably photograph and sketch how the belt components were assembled then cut the old webbing to remove the parts. After the buckles are reconditioned have new webbing replace the 40+ year old material.

Hi Doug
Thanks for the reply. All set with getting FDTS in Byfleet to re-web them, what I need to know is how to take the actual parts of the buckle apart. I presume they would be taken apart.

TBH, I think it is unlikely that the buckles should be stripped before re plating. I may be wrong, but as far as I can remember these buckles are riveted together & to dismantle them strikes me as "risky" to say the least.
