Bob,
You seem to always have beautifully dimensioned pictures of almost any detail on a Mk1 mini, one would think you are planning to write a book on the subject

Re: classic mini mk1 moustache surround fitting
I skipped over this thread thinking you were asking about the moustache. The holes shown dimensioned above are what I would refer to as the whisker mounting holes. Are those what you are after and is the moustache itself (the large center portion) already fitted?
My method to locate the holes may seem rather clunky but it allows you to spot the locations where they need to be for your car's moustache, clips and whiskers.
Fit the whisker clips to the whiskers.
Take a pea sized lump of modeling clay and attach it to the back of each clip.
Offer the whisker up to the moustache and manipulate it around until it "looks right".
Press the whisker down firmly to "mush" out the modeling clay.
Carefully lift the whisker back off starting from the outside end. Use a small screwdriver to separate the clay from the clips, leaving the clay on the front panel.
The clay will have a witness mark/boss at the rivet hole.
Center punch through the center of the boss on the clay and drill the front panel for the rivet.
It may not put the holes in the factory location but it will locate the holes where you feel the whiskers look right on your car's front panel.

Re: classic mini mk1 moustache surround fitting
hi sir,
thank you so much for your post.
yes, i am looking for the original moustache to replace the one i have. this is because when i tried to fit the moustache on the front panel, it seems like each side of the moustache is not the same position (see photos). i think it is bended. so, i need the correct whisker hole to force the moustache into the correct position.
is the reproduction moustache ok to use?
regards

One could make the appropriate joins of the regulator box wires to accommodate the alternator then leave the voltage regulator in place for authenticity.

Which is what I have on my car. The harness is intact so the working dynamo and control box can quickly be put back on the engine by a future owner.LarryLebel wrote:One could make the appropriate joins of the regulator box wires to accommodate the alternator then leave the voltage regulator in place for authenticity.

Is this the correct method to complete the dynamo/alternator mod? Is it recommend? Any tips? Not really had any problems, but feel i would be left scratching my head in the event of a fault.. I like the fact it's totally reversible too. Cheers

Welcome to the world of aftermarket panels! Nothing ever fits right.............. I'm afraid it is a case of shifting it around until it "looks right" it looks like it's just a tad high on one side?

Yes it's a recognised mod and as DK Lawson says reversible. Keeps the existing wiring and control box looking neat. Only visible difference is the presence of an alternator.

Or you can fit one of these.....
"To replace the most common Lucas dynamos Powerlite have developed their Dynalite alternator which looks just like the original Lucas dynamo, thus maintaining the original underbonnet appearance. They even use original Lucas end castings."

Re: classic mini mk1 moustache surround fitting
They certainly are expensive probably due to small production numbers........although they are comparable in price to alternators for many modern cars.mk1 wrote:The Dynalites are VERY expensive though.

Re: classic mini mk1 moustache surround fitting
hi all
i have not fitted the moustache yet because i tried to look for a good shape. by the way, after i got another 2 moustaches. it is surprising me that the repro one is not a good shape at the end as well. i also got another 6-holes one but not sure it is original or not but it is quit good shape but it is thiner than original one.
from the pics (top to bottom) : 6 holes type, original (thick steel), repro from somer ford

Re: classic mini mk1 moustache surround fitting
hi again
for the conversion from dynamo to alternator, have you guys try the dummy lucar regulator to use with the alternator? i have seen the circuit on their website it looks better. mine is just connecting the wires between the terminal. i am not sure the it will be strong for daily use or not.
