Paint types

i have 2 choices in types of paint.

either 2 pack or top coat and clear. both has pros and cons,

but i have a few questions.

does fiesta yellow only come in 2 pack , like original? or can it be done in base and clear, i would like to paint it in base and clear, as it will give a better finish than the 2 pack.

i have a paint code for fiesta yellow YL11, and also a ici code, P420-3484, i got that code from a post on the MCR forum, is there any way to check that that code is the right colour? as its a big expense if its wrong.

Base coat and then use 2 pack clear coat.

Hi Dean yes that is the correct code for Fiesta yellow.Yl 11 is the Bmc code and 420 3484 is a ICI code.Have you considered using Cellulose for a more original type of finish ?

searched a couple of brands one does not list the colour

The other one does list the colour, but only as a solid colour (2 pack top coat)

You may find a supplier that can mix it in basecoat, but i would ask for a small sample first, you can then do a spray out and check if the colour is acceptable.

Unfortunately when buying in ready mixed colour, your fate lies in the hands of the mixer.

It is available in two pack straight colour, and if you really wanted a clearcoat finish you could still clearcoat the two pack finish. But this would require an additional few hrs to do this.

I would personally just go with a two pack finish it will be just as durable and no reason it should fade any quicker than base and clear if looked after.

The only other point i would make when painting yellow i would advise a white primer underneath as yellow is notorious for poor coverage, and the more paint you apply does not necessarily mean a better finish, just more orange peel and more dirt in it

The trouble is nick as you no doubt know is when you also lacquer over solid 2 pack with a couple of coats of clear lacquer the paint ends up so thick . With the base at least you can tack off in between coats that have flashed off as well . I agree with you the best option would be a solid 2 pack . I've just painted almond green in clear over base but the roof colour of snowberry I had to paint in a solid . The last time I painted fiesta yellow I gave it a couple thin coats of white basecoat first . It helps the colour no end and also helps kill any silicone that can occur in that first coat of solid .

Yes Swifty I agree the micron build can become excessive quickly.

And I also have used white basecoat before painting yellow. But prefer to use white primer as this then cuts out that step.

I would imagine there must be a supplier somewhere that can mix a basecoat version. The other problem is getting solvent basecoat. There are company's selling it but it tends to be obscure brands with no real backup or warranty.

I had some snowberry base coat mixed for me and it turned out good. The supplier has the mix on record.

I personally dislike the 2k solid finish it looks too thick.

its nice to get people own views from people who have been there and done it. i know nothing about paint

i will mention about using a white primer, but i don't want to seem like i telling them how to suck eggs, as they may already do that when they paint yellows and whites.

i was a bit concerned that they mayn't be able to get FY in base, like you can just get in 2 pack. and like said its down to the person thats mixing it.
it maybe a case of it being close. i find out when they do a test spray on a card.

i liked the sound of base and clear as does not look so thick and the the clear is a better protection

but like said you can clear coat 2 pack but then you make it look like its been sprayed thick, which i don't want

glad that ici code is correct and i just have to wait and see what it looks like on the test cards when it comes to that time. thats going to be hard as FY looks slightly different in different lights
