Twin SU's

Post by MMM1965 »

Hello, I'm looking for a little advice regarding my 1965 mini minor. It is almost completely standard apart from the fact that it has a 1098 engine from a Riley kestrel fitted. It presently has a single HS2 carb on it but as it would have (I believe, stand to be corrected) twin SU's fitted, would it be a good idea for me to go down this route or would I regret it? It runs perfectly at present and the memories of constantly trying to get my Triumph Spitfire to run properly years ago fills me with dread. Any advice gratefully received.

Jeremy,

If it's running well on the single HS2 at the moment and you're happy with it then keep it as is.

If you do go for a change to twin HS2s then you will likely need to get all of the following :
- twin HS2s on a Mini (not 1100) inlet manifold, will probably need carbs rebuilt
- for the 'original look' get some suitable air filters, such as the Cooper tin box
- new exhaust manifold (assuming you have cast iron at present), may need new exhaust as well

When all is done and set up the twin HS2s should give you a couple of bhp extra.

What about a single HS4? This is what was fitted to 1098 Clubmans.

The problems start when they are worn.

Twin SUs in good order are fine.

I'd get a 295 head, a freeflow manifold, and up the compression ratio to about 10:1. Whack some twins on it after you have rebuilt them.

A good change would be a single HS4 no more aggravation than the HS2 but a bit more flow if the engine needs it. But as has already been said if the HS2 is OK, I wouldn't change it.
