Ian . I think maplins do a tracker item that has a battery in it . One of them placed in the car there trying to steal when your out may help. Trouble is a good thief goes equipped with a blocker nowadays ! A mate of mine had a classic escort nicked a few years ago and by the time it was disguised up a bit he had to prove the car was his . Luckily he had a bit of common sense and put some of his own markings on it during the restoration

TMF (The Mini Forum) has a dedicated section for stolen classic Mini's, mostly later daily drivers but also quite a few little used classics reported missing recently.

That's incredible.

What I would do is get some ptfe tape and wrap around your garage door handle and lock. Then get some ptfe grease and mix in some Hydrofluoric Acid (used for glass etching) and wipe it over the taped surfaces. Basically, anyone who touches it will probably have to have fingers amputated.

Problem with the above, much as it does appeal is that you would probably have to sell your car to pay the villain the compensation he would undoubtedly win in court.

correct Mark

Many years back when sierra cossys were all the rage , i knew a chap that kept having his nicked off his drive despite being alarmed etc - he made a seat cushion with a rather unique scalpel blade filling

Result for him- Jail , compensation payable to theif, lost job, car, house

although he cut the thief another 40 odd arseholes

English law - all wrong

Lowest on my list is a thief. My son has tons of friends and like them all but when I say why doesn't so and so stop by as he lives right around the corner my boy replies because he's a thief.

CCTV does sound good but in reality if there wearing gloves and a hoodie with a face covering it won't do no good . Apart from bolting it to the ground a thief doesn't like dogs or noise . Saying that , a salvage yard I buy cars from had all there cat converters stolen by some thieves and the dogs had several juicy steaks . . There is a screamer siren available witch I'm told is illegal . But believe me my mate has got one and it is so loud you couldn't stand it for longer than 20 seconds . It will only work once because they might come back with ear defenders . I feel for you I really do . Bit of a predicament that's for sure .

Forget car theft (sorry I know it's hard to when you've had one nicked) ( I had three Minis/Coopers done in the late 80's/ early 90's) it's your debit cards you need to keep hold of ! Card fraud is massive nowadays and only on the up ! Pocket dipping is also very much back in fashion , in cities especially and for me there's no such thing as too much CCTV.

After reading this the other day I bought a cheap GPS tracker off ebay & am very pleased with it. For around £40 quid including a free SIM & £10 of credit you can fit them into your car & track where it is on your phone.

A valuable investment I reckon. All my cars will be getting one fitted over the coming months.

Not sure that every car thief goes equipped with a Mobile phone jammer.

Mark, it would be worth checking to make sure the sim is not turned off through lack of use, sometimes you have to use the sim at least every three months or so or they will pull the number as being unused, I had that trouble with the alarm in my garage which rings my phone if when it goes off. You might have to take it out and put it in your phone and ring your house number and answer it to make a connection then it will be current for another few months, I don't believe texting works, it has to be a phone call that is answered.

Please check and make sure I'm not talking rubbish (normally the case). Anyone else confirm or deny the above?

A Security Guard once said to me " Dead Men don't tell lies ". Now, I'm not suggesting anyone try anything on, however those were words of 'wisdom' (as he put it) from a trained professional.

Personally, I subscribe to the 'cut off the hand that steals the bread' outlook.

My garage was broken into last year. I had the impression from the lack of stuff taken from my hoarders paradise that they'd be back again, so fitted some high end day/night cameras recording on a CCTV hdd recorder setup on motion record only. This way I can quickly whizz through what's been moving around (mostly wildlife!) two months later 2x goldie looking chain band member lookalikes returned in the early hours. I got some clear footage of them seeing the cameras and not styling out the fact they'd been recorded up to no good. This footage is now helping Police with their inquiries regards the other ten garage break in locally.

The other use of my cameras is that my garage backs onto some woods and parkland, it's nice to see who or what's outside spooking me at night! :?

Glad it put them off. My next move will be a steel bar across the doors and a wireless alarm system with built in land line speech SMS text alerts.

There is a new tracking system available that can be programmed for many uses that I intend to trial this year. I'll update the stolen section on this forum?

Considering I work for a security installer you would have thought I was keen on CCTV, but not so. With dash cams going all the rage on cars now peoples movements are on camera everywhere they go,

Regards

John

That is a good point & something I had not thought of. At the moment however, I am still at the hiding it in things and seeing where they are stage at 1 txt message per check the novelty hasn't worn off yet.
