It is actually just a standard British Leyland colour used across pretty much the entire model range in the early 1970s
I think the colour code is BLVC23. Might have been introduced just after "S" production finished which would explain the lack of Mk3"S" cars in that colour? As has been said, quite an attractive period colour, a very dark purple 8-) . I recall a lot of MGBs and Marinas in that get-up among others.

Here's my ex's RWA midget about 1986,K-reg,birds were the same back then chosen by colour not fit/function
