Moulton Mini up for auction....

Post by Pete »

http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/21274/lot/351/

He pretty much this car all it's life didn't he , though I do remember it being for sale (pretty cheap to !) some years ago ? Downton history , lots of Moulton tweeks, reshelled into a '68/69 shell in period apparently, anyone know why ?

Enjoyed reading this little write up showing Alex with his car :

http://www.ibiscycles.com/info/news/sco ... ex_moulton

I'll post some shots of him with the Mk1 car when he got it later.

Fab car, Im sure that will fetch serious money with it's provenance.
Love the radio mounted in the door pocket!

I thought that was ace as well. Do you reckon 8-tracks work mounted vertically ?
But then again they eat tapes horizontally

I used to run my 8 track and and a cassette player in the door pocket worked great except for keeping the rain out and the sizable "loom" running through the door shut.

looking at the blue car I noticed the body number starts with an ' L ' ............ I think I'm correct but wouldn't that mean it was for an automatic ? Maybe it was a pre used shell ?

I think it was a pre used shell and was done later than in the auction description because here's the car in August 1970 and it's still Mk1 :

Well to be fair the auction description did say 'reshelled around 1968' which may be slightly misleading but I wouldn't think is a deal breaker for whoever wants to buy it , it's not like they're completely fabricating the car's history as some like to do. The car is certainly the car that's for sure and though it's no looker there's great history behind it , ditto the Moke !

The FE Number pretty much ties in with the second date on the rocker box.

I bought a 1966 Cooper in 1969 & if it hadn't 'automatically' been given an MOT by the garage selling it, it would have failed on corroded outer sills, inner sills, boot floor & rear subframe, so maybe 1966 was a bad year, that may have been the reason.

Alex Moulton used to bring this car to Somerford for repairs / servicing over the years. My brother (hazily) recalls that it had quite a few interesting mods, including Hydrogas suspension, unique subframe and engine mounts made by Avon which vastly reduced noise and vibration, double wishbone front suspension, a 5 speed box and a hatch in the rear bulkhead to access "his equipment". He also remembers it having at the time a Rolls Royce driver's seat and an engine running a single HS6 (tuned by Richard Longman for "economy, smoothness and quietness"!)… it drove like a Bentley! As he remembers, it was reshelled because the original was totalled. The body had also been quite crudely bodged over the years too, as Dr. Moulton wasn't particularly interested in that side of things.
