New Carb Needle Selection tool
The CARBURETTOR TECHNICAL section of the mai MK1 Site has received a major upgrade.
As well as the original archive documents, I am very pleased to be able to offer a truly exceptional NEEDLE SELECTION TOOL that you can download and use.
This tool covers all SU & Zenith / Stromberg needles & jets. This exceptional tool was developed by Ian Hamilton & is offered via the MK1 site to help you select the correct carburettor needle for your application. I will also be shortly publishing another tool developed by Ian, this helps calculate gearbox & final drive ratios. Check back shortly for this update.
You can download this brilliant tool here;

Re: New Carb Needle Selection tool
Hello to Mark and everyone else on the Forum!
Thank you Mark, for your very kind introduction to my "needles.xxx.ods" spreadsheet, and thanks for uploading the latest version (v015) to the http://mk1-performance-conversions.co.uk main website. See the Technical Section, Carburation.
This latest version is much improved over the previous version published on the Mk1 site, v012. (Versions 013 and 014 were experimental versions and were not published, so no-one has missed out!) Much more attention has been given to "ease of use" issues and accordingly, most fields now have pull-down menus. What this means is that most of the spreadsheet can be operated using the mouse as well as the keyboard.
The layout of some of the tabs has been amended to fit the screen better than before and the handling of invalid input has been improved.
The accuracy of the "Suggested Needles" feature has been greatly improved by switching from diameter based comparison to a comparison of the exposed jet area. The data tabs have a slightly different appearance as a result.
Full details of the spreadsheet as it stands at the moment are contained in the ReadMeFirst.015.txt file which is contained within the zip file. For those of you who already have v012, a re-read of this information and a quick read of the "Updates.015.txt" file is highly recommended.
Remember, the only authorised place that this spreadsheet is available online is from the http://mk1-performance-conversions.co.uk website.
Many thanks for your interest. Any queries/comments can be posted via this forum and I shall try to check for these on at least a weekly basis.

Re: New Carb Needle Selection tool (v016)
FREE NEEDLE SELECTION TOOL/UTILITY SPREADSHEET
Minor updates have been made to the spreadsheet to allow a .pdf
version to be created for preview purposes.
The latest "needles.zip" file now contains:
Needles.016.Mk1.ods
Needles.016.Mk1.pdf
The .pdf version is a truncated non-functioning image of the
actual .ods spreadsheet.
Mark - Do you want to update this on the main Mk1 site?
(If so, I'll send it to you separately and edit this post to
put in a link... If not, I'll attach it to this post)
Whilst other similar utilities of this type are currently available,
this one appears to be unique in that it makes comparisons
based on the exposed jet area. This is far more accurate than
using the diameter and also allows needles to be compared
which are from different jet size ranges.
This is also a stand-alone utility that requires no registration,
payment or internet connection. All you need to use it is the
free/easily obtainable LibreOffice or OpenOffice document suite.
(You know, the free one that isn't Micro$oft...)

The recommended suite, LibreOffice v3.4,
can be downloaded from this location:
http://www.oldapps.com/libreoffice.php? ... ffice=7190
The latest (untested) version of LibreOffice can be downloaded from:

Re: New Carb Needle Selection tool (v018)
FREE NEEDLE SELECTION TOOL/UTILITY SPREADSHEET
Contains Needle Charts for all known SU and Zenith Stromberg carbs.
The latest "needles.zip" file (433Kb) now contains:
Needles.018.Mk1.ods
Needles.018.Mk1.pdf
The .pdf version is a truncated non-functioning image of the
actual .ods spreadsheet and contains the documentation.
Many thanks to Mark for uploading this to the Mk1 site:
http://mk1-performance-conversions.co.u ... l_carb.htm
Latest addition is a "Drop Jet" facility which recalculates the
needle as if the jet has been wound down by up to one index
increment, ie 1/8". This uses steps of 5%, which works out
to be equivalent to about one "flat" on a pre-HIF SU.
If you are in a position where you've had to wind the jet down
and the needle now is correct everywhere apart from tickover,
you can use the results to locate a revised needle to suit using
the "test" feature on the relevant data tab.
There is now also a "Show/Hide" feature on the Basic tab to
de-clutter the chart in case there is "information overload"...
Some other bits and pieces have changed slightly as well
but these should be obvious or self-explanatory.
Any queries can be posted via this thread.
I hope you find it useful!

Re: New Carb Needle Selection tool
Hello Robert,
The .ODS file is an "Open Document" type spreadsheet which will open using
either LibreOffice or OpenOffice, LibreOffice being the preferred software.
It is not a Microsoft type of file and I have not attempted to open it using
Excel because of this. LibreOffice is an easily available product similar to
Microsoft Office and the best thing about it is that it is free. No licence
is required, no registration and no payment...
The main article provides a link to LIBREOFFICE, but I would recommend
that version 3.4 is used as this is the same as the version that I used to
write the spreadsheet. This can be obtained from:
http://www.oldapps.com/libreoffice.php? ... ffice=7190
You already have Excel, but you can install LibreOffice as well because the
install program allows you to choose which document files you want it to
work with. You can leave Excel to open the .XLS files and get LibreOffice to
open the .ODS files. Unless you are a really advanced user, the LibreOffice
software should be able to do pretty much anything you want it to do.
The .PDF is a sort of cut down, non-working copy, just to provide some kind
of an idea what it is all about. The .ODS file is NOT PASSWORD PROTECTED for
normal use, but all "non-user" fields are protected to stop it from getting broken.
If you were to obtain and use the recommended office-type software, I am
sure that you will have no problems and will find the spreadsheet very helpful.
Good luck!
Ian

I have attempted to explain exactly how it all works in the
ReadMeFirst information and by the use of "context help".
Clicking many of the headings brings up help information.
If anything is at all unclear, contact me via this thread and
I'll explain it, and re-write the help if necessary.

This is a minor update version:
Debug: Some greying-out issues fixed.
Improvement: The Jet Size Recalculator can now apply to either needle on "Advanced".
Unlike the existing WinSU facility, this alternative is completely free....
Any queries can be posted via this thread.
I hope you find it useful!
