alloy panels

some time ago I remember mark looking into a run of boot and bonnets, did they ever get produced ?, seem to remember he got samples from a forum member , think I am going to try and shed some pounds from the rally car

This never happened. The alloy bonnet & boot I had, spent over a year with Magnum car panels in Rochdale who intermittently tried to produce some, I eventually came to the conclusion it wasn't going to happen & asked for my panels back. These were subsequently sold on the forum.

The problem they had was that whatever they tried to do the edge flange would tear off as the panel was pressed. It was as far as I am aware eventually given up as a bad job.

It may however be worth ringing them to see if they did get them sorted, I would have thought that I would have heard about it if they did though.

There's a bloke down here who hand makes alloy panels, mainly does healey 300's and other stuff. but have asked him to make me some alloy panels up for my car

Sure I read about your attempt to get some made Mark .

I am also interested in mk1 alloy panels but had knocked the idea on the head really following Marks attempt . I have since thought about carbon or fibreglass panels and even just using a steel outer skin for the bootlid but put it on the back burner and the engine is now my current headache.
I have a few big Healeys come in at work and am fully aware of the skill, time and effort and cost that would be involved in making panels for them .

Are the Mini panels likely to be costly ?
There may well be some other members interested .

I can't imagine how hand made alloy panels couldn't be expensive. Think of the time it would take to make a boot or bonnet lid!

Mark do you remember that alloy bonnet for sale at Harrogate autojumble all those years ago (20 ??) ? I think some students had made it, and as I recall it was several hundred quid even then !

I certainly do! Hanging up on the side of a white van. As you say it was V expensive even back then. M

Paul Wiggington on turbo Mini's has done alot of ally work props worth a chat with him

sure hes done his boot lid, bonnet, door skins, boot floor, rocker cover, timing cover err alot more

Problem with ally is it dents easy! and not easy to beat out again

Well I think ( think being the word ) its looking around 350 for a bootlid and the same if not a little bit more for a bonnet for my car, bearing in mind I want mine all Alloy and no steal, and also its abit cut down to most cars oh and yes Paul is a magician with metal
