Yes that is the evolution of the Morris, first it was Bob's and then Rogers car. It raced for many years and was changed to suite the rules of the day to be competitive.

Pete, many North American cars ended up being registered as the year they were imported, rather than the manufacture date, which confuses things fairly often. I have suggested that John get a Heritage Certificate on the Morris and have sent him the link. I have not heard back as of yet from Steve N but no surprise there. As you say not a high priority for those with better things to do!

This is possibly the best thread I've ever read on old race Minis, I shall enjoy getting into my CCC replica and driving down for a weekends Motorsport at Wiscombe Park in a minute or two thinking about how nice it would be to own one of these cars :D

it would appear that in order to make your car more authentic, you need to fit a set of nasa wheel arches on to it! :lol: :lol:


this thread is great, ive said it before but finding rare cars with the history unfolding before our eyes is just great, nobody can argue with period photos and 'as found' photos

This style of arches was developed by the Fortech Mini folks for SCCA racing in North America. It was a legitimate add on which allowed the use of 13" wheels and was considered state of the art for the period of late 1970s-80s. Subsequently, aftermarket companies including some in the UK, began making horrendous copies of these and they gained a reputation of being cheap and ungainly. While most folks may want to restore a Mini racecar as it looked in the 1960s, some may want to go for the look of a different period. Therefor these arches should be looked at as period correct for an SCCA/IMSA racecar from the mid 1970s-80s.

In 20 years are we going to rip apart the arches which are on today's Mini Miglia racecars?

I guess it will depend if the base car was a valuable mk1 cooper s!


fortec kits always make me laugh for the following reason.......

many years ago a mate of mine decided what he needed on his car was a fortec kit, never mind that is was a 1000 on drum brakes with 10" wheels......

he spent weeks attaching this mass of fibreglass using the (then) cutting edge method of expanding foam and filler (he didn't use any glassfibe or anything like that!!!). all done it looked like a bt comer van as the wheels stuck so far into the arches :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:


it lasted about a week before a front wheel fell off, went under the body, dragging and smashing most of the body kit as it skidded down the road, we had to go and (try) to tow him home, the car was sat in the middle of the road, sans one wheel, looking if it been in some sort of collision with an expanding foam factory, there was foam, lumps of filler, hunks of fibreglass all over the road :lol:


it never saw the road again :lol: :lol: :lol:

it was then I decided that the 'nasa' part stood for 'no actual sensible application!' :lol:

I'll stick with the group 2's for now even if they ended up dirty after the weekend :lol: , though I could be persuaded to take the Red (Blue / Green) car on if someone really twisted my arm :lol:

...I have always thought group 2,s matched with yoko,s are just about the best thing for yer s..?!..

Slight diversion here, here's VPK (ex Sebring) at an Italian hillclimb. I do remember the late Paul Lips showing me this photo some years ago when he was researching the car. Anyone got any more info on this, a year or venue would be a start, and a reason VPK turned up in Italy ?

I think Rachel's car is in for paint pretty soon in it's original Arden colour scheme. 8-)

Just on my photo of VPK, does anyone recognise the hillclimb ? Bolzano-Mendola ?? I've a feeling the car was sold after Sebring to one of the other drivers, looking into this now... ;)

Hi guys,

Been too busy on the car to surf the web of late and indulge in the forum, or put any time into chasing down more facts. It is on the list to update my website "history page" on the car. As Bart suggests, a summary would be a great idea, with everything we know and presume to date.

I have also been meaning to start a new thread on the "our cars & projects" section. The car is nearing the painting stage now. Some difficult choices regarding colour schemes had to be made, given the 50 year competition history across so many racing disciplines. Trying to pay tribute to all is a challenge. In the end, we decided it was best to paint it as-found, with the exterior Wedgewood Blue with the contrasting dark blue/white stripe, the engine compartment and underneath Tweed Grey, and the interior Arden Blue. It is probably difficult for many to understand this choice, especially those not from the Eastern US. However, the Wedgewood blue combo is very significant in North America linking back to Bob Kimes race cars, and the car's many years of racing in those colours in SCCA C-Sedan.

Nick at Swiftune is cooking up a good engine over the winter as well, and we hope to be testing the car with the spare engine by April of 2014 when the first track days come available.

I know everyone is busy but I need the timeline on this car. I am living vicariously through this thread and I need a fix. You've got the good stuff and I need it bad. I swear I will start rehab just get me through Thanksgiving.

Yes, I have been following the rebuild and it looks great. Andy and Rachel do geat work and are very nice people to boot. I got to meet them some years ago when they came to my house to pick up the remains of the Red Shimberg car, the white one.

What I am talking about is the history of the car. Pete did a bunch of research on this and as I go through it I have become confused as to what the history of this car is and what the facts are. What I would like to see, as if nobody as anything better to do, is a timeline including who owned it, the re-shell, races completed in for what team, and reg numbers. I am very interested in the history of old race cars and find it facinating. Even more so when that car is a mini.

Seriously, its not like Andy and Rachel have jobs and lives. I am sure that they have plenty of time to answer my questions in their spare time because this is all about me and my mental health. Pete you're at fault here for my continuing self medication as well. Does whiskey count as beer?
