Holes in floor pan

Post by SteveG »

Whats the story with the holes? Did they serve a purpose at the factory?

My Feb 64 S has one in the passenger side and 3 on the drivers side (see photo) I've seen another 64 S on here with 2 holes on passenger side.

The rear ones a a bit random also. What was the point of them?

Post 'roto dip' drainage is my understanding. The bungs were then fitted and the shells painted on early cars I've seen (ie no top coat under the bungs) but then on a couple of mid 60's cars I've seen the bungs definately looked like they'd been fitted after paint.

I thought everyone knew that those holes were in the floor pan to prevent premature ageing of the carpet. If people accidentally brought amounts of moisture into the vehicle on the souls of their feet, these holes were there to allow a good circulation of dry air to prevent the floor pan & carpet form suffering at all.

A good illustration as to how well this active ventilation system worked is the superb condition Mini floors can be found in today not to mention how common original carpet is.
