Sealer/gasket between inside firewall and guage surround?

Post by Ratkiller »

I have a 62' Morris Mini Minor Super Deluxe. Originally was there a gasket to go between the white plastic speedo guage surround and the inside fire wall? If not fitted originally, what do you recommend? As mine is a little warpped and does not fit flush. It would be nice to seal it up, to cut down on engine noise.

I am not sure about what your cars had in the UK but here in NZ, there was a soft black putty used.

I used silicone sealant. Also stuffed soundproofing felt behind the speedo then stuck a 'bulkhead blanket' to the bulkhead on the engine side. On the cabin side, stick-on bitumastic sound deadening sheet on the bulkhead and top side of the dashboard shelf, followed by soundproofing felt on the bulkhead. It's now significantly quieter and less smelly.

Hi John,

I hope you used acid free silicone sealer ??

Normal silicone have acid in it, and makes the car rust.

Here it was Grey, but still soft putty.
It stay soft, only hardens a little on the surface.

Agree with the above.

My cars have had a black "putty" used from factory.
I used a black 'screen sealer on mine, never fully sets, but won't run either.

It makes a huge diference to the ammount of engine noise in the car, and also stops annoying draughts/smells.

I can Agree with James. His 970 Screamer sounds like a 848 inside the car!
You have to check the speedo to realize its not :)

I accidently discovered the perfect stuff for this, and for the winder mechanisms in mk3 doors.

when steel clad buildings are built, there is a roll of grey 'putty' than comes on a non stick backing, its about 15mm wide and goes between the sheets to stop water creeping in.

it works a treat for automotive stuff as it can be wadded up or cut thinner with a knife. its very similar to the old 'dumdum' brand stuff

when our unit was repaired after the tree fell on it, the fitters left half a roll......... 8-)
please note, these are my own, individual sales, nothing whatsoever to do with my employer, minispares

Sounds exactly like what I found right under the bottom chromed profiles of my '64 doors when I dismantled them to change the W shaped rails. Hope you understand my poor English !
Still Mark, where did you source your material ?

"panel sealer"
I'll have to check with my hard ware store to see they carry the stuff.
Cheers.

What about a peel and stick foam weather strip?

Me too, Steve.
Cheers Mark, will check that.
But we use some self taping foam with eventually a filler of silicone to weatherproof panels on buildings this side of the channel.
Usually for crap result, I must say.

And I don't have any bulkhead insulation on the engine bay side, or anything stuffed in the speedo hole!

The problem with stick-on foam is that it breaks down over the years and sometimes turns to goo. Something easily obtained, non-hardening and similar to the original is plumbers putty. It's just there to fill the gap so glue isn't really necessary.

I use a 3M body caulking ( 08568 ) for the dial housing to bulkhead. It is probably the same type of thing that Guru was talking about.
Its good for round the loom at the base of the dial housing and also great for bedding the door window winder on.

It's grey in colour.

I found this image on the net.

Interestiung the reference to dum-dum. I didn't mention dum-dum because I thought you UK foreigners wouldn't know what the hell I was talking about but that is the name of the stuff used for the job here.

That's what I used on mine too. Excellent stuff with many uses and, unlike dum-dum, isn't messy and stays put :)
