Hi all,
This is my first post to the forum as a new member. I am from the Gold Coast Australia and have been around Minis for over 35 years and currently own 3.
A 62 Cooper
A 65 850
And a very early 850 that I am awaiting delivery of.
My question :
I know that all oz minis arrived in Oz in CKD form and assembled locally, and that (at least on later cars) there were some local variations compared to UK cars - like windup windows, and some interior colours etc..
Given this, can anyone point me in the direction where I might find a list of these differences?
I would really like to confirm the original colour/s of the interior of my 62 Cooper. The paint colours are Platnium White roof on Shadow Blue.
It has been suggested that it would have had dove grey seats/carpet, but others have told me all Australian Coopers had black seats/lining/carpets (I'm pretty sure this is correct for Oz 'S') I have also been told that powder blue / dove grey would have been the interior colours.. WT..
I'm hoping that the forums combined wisdom may have a definitive answer!
Thanks All,
doc Martin

Re: Oz Mini Interior Colours
Hi Doc, I think I have your car on my list (Car 7## / 27####), I think you’re asking in the wrong place here, a lot of knowledge, but not so much on early Aus stuff.
To try and address some of your questions:
Q: I know that all oz minis arrived in Oz in CKD form and assembled locally, and that (at least on later cars) there were some local variations compared to UK cars - like windup windows, and some interior colours etc..
Given this, can anyone point me in the direction where I might find a list of these differences?
A: No real definitive list, Watto’s articles in the Mini Experience are pretty reliable, I will also help where I can. Ausmini site has some knowledgeable people, but also a fair few ‘knobs’ who have lead me to not post on there so much.
Q: I would really like to confirm the original colour/s of the interior of my 62 Cooper. The paint colours are Platnium White roof on Shadow Blue.
A: I always thought the roof colour platinum was a light silvery blue? I would have suspected a light blue or grey with that exterior colour, but not 100% sure, there is a guy in South Australia with a car in those colours, might have a contact for him....
Q: It has been suggested that it would have had dove grey seats/carpet, but others have told me all Australian Coopers had black seats/lining/carpets (I'm pretty sure this is correct for Oz 'S') I have also been told that powder blue / dove grey would have been the interior colours.. WT..
A: Would not be UK colours / upholstery, all Aus CKD Coopers had Aus sourced trim. Early 997’s had some poor quality stripey carpet that looked horrendous! Later 998 and possibly late 997 had the Westminster style as per Mk 1 S. Door trims were plain vinyl like the 850’s, probably grey on your car? I am positive that no early Coopers had plain black trim except maybe very rare factory black car? But they were most probably red interior. Aussie Mk2 Cooper S, yes, a lot (but not all) had All black.
This may be a case (when restoring) of choosing a style that is potentially similar to original style, the chances of finding original are close to nil.
I have some pictures of an original white 997 interior and scraps of carpet from my green / green car. Wild Willy on Ausmini has some bits of carpet too.
Cheers
Graham

Re: Oz Mini Interior Colours
Hi Graham,
Yes, I am the same person.
I suspected that this question may have been on the wrong list, but noticed there was some activity of ozzies, and some talk about both oz and UK added to that I had had only limited success on the oz forum.
Any advice you could give me would be most appreciated as with any samples or pictures of such.. If you don't still have my email address sent me a PM and ill pass them on.
Oh, and your right, the Platinum is a white with a blue/silver tinge..but looks white in isolation.
I thought the linings would have been grey, would the seats also be grey in a single colour with grey carpets?
Like I said, any pics you could send through to me should help a lot.
Cheers

Re: Oz Mini Interior Colours
This is possibly what yours should look like I'd question the Westminster carpet probably should have the early fleck carpet, early carpet like Graham says is horrendous
