Alternator problem?

Post by YMJ »

Sorry - non Mini but this is a crisis of Baldrick proportions......
.....potential buyer coming to look at the Clio Cup 172 (standard road car) at the weekend but now, all-of-a-sudden, the bloody STOP and Battery warning lights have started to come on intermittantly (that is, one minute I can start up and go for a drive with no problem and the next minute I can start up, the lights come on and no amount of driving or revvving will change the situation). I suspect a loose wire somewhere but I don't know where to look! I cannot believe the alternator is buggered as sometimes the lights are are on and other times it's Happy Days.
NB. I can put a voltmeter across the battery terminals when no warning lights and it'll read 14.75v, so it must be charging, mustn't it. Confess, I haven't tried it when the're on yet
Any ideas?

Loose fan belt, bad earth also check the connections on to the starter solenoid are tight as most cars alternator charging wire goes back to there.

Just in case anyone was worried, it was the alternator.
After plenty of timewasters it's still for sale by the way, so I have reduced the price to £3250 for a quick sale
