Mini and Moke in Rhodesia.

Post by 36inter »

Just had a friend send me some old pictures of Rhodesia and these were among them, good stuff. They are a bit on the small side but thats how they came.

Hello JC,

You have better eyes than me, I wonder what happened to them, probably a brown stain somewhere.

I've had a closer look at the photo's, is it my imagination or is that a ramp behind the Moke and did it come out of what I think is a DC3.

I like the two Jags alongside the police Mini but can anyone tell me what the car is to the left of the Mini, a distinctive sidelight should give the game away I would have thought.

Certainly a DC3 & I am sure the sidelight belongs to an Austin Westminster.

I reckon Westminster too. Same side/flasher lamp as the MG Midget isn't it?

I have seen those pics somewhere before, but I can't remember where, maybe on the web somewhere. I am sure that there are more of the same moke.

This one didn't take too much finding :-)

From

http://www.baragwanath.co.za/moke/index.htm

BMC had a plant at Umtali assembling CKD kits from the 50's until UDI in 1965, they manufactured Minis, Coopers & Mokes amongst other BMC models.

When I was out there in the early 90's there were still a lot on the road all be it most of them were sand blasted & polished pretty much paint free. The dry weather & high altitude had certainly helped to preserve them.

There is a good extract from "The Mini Experience" about Rhodesian production here,

One day I hope to go back & do a bit of Mini spotting as well as other stuff. Unfortunately all my family that lived out there & survived had to run for their lives when Mugabe started sending his "veterans" out to kill white farmers.

I have just found the other one too.

It was posted onto my mate Sean's (sean1380 on here) KZNMini forum.

There's also a better copy of this one about, & it IS a Cooper

I found that here;
