best exhaust to use on a mk1 998 cooper?
998 cooper mk1
,what exhaust manifold and system is good value for money ?
dont want a std pea shooter, but obviously too big a bore is a bit tight in the tunnel and dont want it clanking on the remote housing
wha tdo u guys use?

Re: best exhaust to use on a mk1 998 cooper?
Although my Mini is not a Cooper, it is a 998 modified to give similar power, but without the twin SU's. I use a Sportex LCB manifold with an 1.75" outside diameter Maniflow single box system. The standard system was of that diameter so shouldn't cause you any clearance problems & there is no need to go bigger on an engine of that size. If you want it to look more original, a 1.75" RC40 side exit exhaust looks very much like the exhaust they had as standard. Avoid cheap LCB manifolds where the down pipe from no.4 exhaust port meets the down pipe from no.1 at 90 degrees, that does nothing for the smooth flow of the gases.

i was thinking rc40,,,
theres so many types of manifolds,,,
i have the original 3 branch but its a horrid vile thing,,looks like one of an austin 1100 to me

Personally I'd go for a maniflow 3 into 1. There take on the good old Cooper fabricated job.

I've always tried to use the Maniflow Freeflow as it misses the couplings, which in my experience an LCB does not do. An RC 40 goes on well, is not too loud and looks right.
Re: best exhaust to use on a mk1 998 cooper?
The Maniflow Freeflow isn't a 3 into 1, it's a short LCB...............

I didn't mean the long 3 into 1, i'd never suggest one of those for a standard ish car. I meant this one.

Yep thats still a LCB, identified by the longer centre branch

Re: best exhaust to use on a mk1 998 cooper?
thanks for input
looks like the maniflow in the pics and an rc 40 then
will the rc40 go straight onto this manifold??
i take it it will mate with the std bmc inlet manifold as people say a lot of branch manifold flanges are fatter than the bmc twin carb standard inlet manifold

I'm not certain, but I suspect you will have to hack saw the first kink off the RC40 front pipe.

With the correct RC40 front pipe it's a straight fit to the Maniflow Cooper freeflow manifold, single box or twin box RC40,

Single box RC40 is way too loud. Twin box is nice and subtle.

Re: best exhaust to use on a mk1 998 cooper?
Guess it depends on your own preference.
I've got a single box RC40 on my 998 Cooper which is quite loud but sounds great. I tried a twin box RC40 on my 'S' but it was just too quiet. With a single box RC40 it sounds brilliant
My 998 has a Maniflow Cooper Freeflow which has good clearance on the drive coupling. The only problem I had was that the lower heat shield link plate that holds the throttle return springs fouled on the centre branch. I had to remove the link and relocate the return springs.

Re: best exhaust to use on a mk1 998 cooper?
The "link" fouling problem is common with any of the "lcb" type center pipes; including, the Freeflow. It can be solved by spacing the link away from the two halves to which hit mounts using washers or nuts or short pieces of tubing.
