My son and I joined MOCSA (the Mini Owners Club of South Africa) recently on a run to Katse dam in Lesotho. The 350km trip to Katse dam wall and back on the second day must rank as one of the ultimate Mini with steep gradients, hairpin turns and long S shaped bends taken flat out.

The early cars on the run included a stunning 998 Cooper, another Mk1 1275 S (split webbers, straight cut gear beaut), an 850 Mini (sporting a quick 1275 motor), a S/W with 1071 S motor (the lead car), an SA spec Woleseley, and an SA spec Mk3 with boot.

Following our trip to the Katse dam earlier this year, a few of the MOCSA (Mini owners Club of South Africa) members visited the Drakensberg recently. The weather was blisteringly hot, who would have guessed that just a month before the mountains and roads in the Drakensberg were covered in snow.

Below are pics of our two Almond Green cars (a '64 1071, and '65 1275). The other cars on the trip were another Mk1 1275 S, a 998 Cooper, a 1000 Wolseley, a Station wagon and a Marcos. Hope you enjoy the pics taken at the start, en route and at the resort where we stayed.

...me to jens,.. tks to the guys for posting those pics from sud afrika ,....now !! i have a question..(questions)..were all south african mk1/2 cars the sliding window variety or some and some with quarterlite ??.. as opposed to aussie mk1/2 cars having quarterlites...??!! i appreciate that aussie mk2 types have peculiar similarities to uk mk 1,s in the grille and rear light clusters being rounded !...last point . do mk 3 cooper s type cars exists in south africa and aus.. ?? i cant recall seeing a mk 3 s type in either country...those being with the rect rear light cluster and our uk mk 2/3 type grille ???...ta vm anyone for info..i find the subtle diff in worlwide mini from the mid 60,s thru early 70,s fascinating if a touch quirky !!!. foxy52

In South Africa the "Australian" doors with quarterlight windows officially came into use in early 1967. However, I have seen/heard of several mid-late '66 Cooper S's that have them. Earlier cars all had the sliding windows.

No Mk3 S's were assembled in SA. There were a handful of Mk2's (like 70 or so if I recall correctly).

FYM422GP has a vertical oil cooler, so pre 66 as Leon says.
JJX385GP has a horizontal oil cooler and diagonal front panel stiffener, but still early doors. Early 1966? But also somehow a full skirt front valance?

Hi Foxy, as Abri has pointed out, the 'Aussie' doors were introduced in SA during Mk1 production (our dark green car earlier in the post has these doors). All the S MkII's had these doors. Although the MkIII S was not produced in SA I know of at least two that have found their way to our shores.

Well, I went and checked up on my facts. Ryno Verster's book on South African minis show production(assembly) figures for 31 Mk2 Austin Cooper S's in the July '68 to June '69 financial year at the Blackheath plant in Cape Town. However, between July '67 and June '68 138 Austin Cooper S 1275's were built. I'd assume that from Jan '68 they'd have been Mk2's. So the total of 70 I mentioned earlier, I'm not sure where I got it from. There could be a few more.
