speedo gears

Post by sclemow »

Does anyone know if you can change the speedo gears in a remote change gearbox without taking the engine and 'box out?

It can be done but it's a bit of a fiddle. Remove the radiator, support that side of the gearbox on a jack, release the engine mounting & remove the engine mounting bracket. Jack up the engine & gearbox, rather like you do when changing a clutch, but on the opposite end. Remove the alloy block to which the engine mounting bracket attaches, remove speedo cable, release all the bolts holding the speedo drive housing to the box. There are some long studs which have to be unscrewed by locking 2 nuts onto each, the casing can then be carefully fiddled out past the subframe, making adjustments to the height of the jack if necessary. I hope I've remembered everything, it's about 40 years since I did that job, in my case to do a temporary fix on a loose mainshaft nut.
