Mk1 rack overhaul

Post by Andrew1967 »

The n/s bush has broken up on the rack of my Mk1 S replica :(

Is it possible to replace this bush in situ ?

I presume the worst and think I will have to remove the rack for overhaul. It was bad enough on my 850 and I know this is going to be much worse to do.

Hi andrew, there is a thread somewhere, not sure whether its here on Mark,s site or the MCR, explaining that it can be done in situ, however it did look abit tricky and involved drilling, tapping etc.
I had the same n/s bush problem and after a year of it knocking away i finally got round to swapping racks last weekend, a horrible, horrible job but a much nicer drive when done.cheers Tim
ps. watch out for the brake pipe from brake light switch up to the 3 way when lowering the subframe

just had this problem  finished up replacing rack, wasted 2 nights messing about trying to fit a bush, without sucess :x :x good point there on the brakepipe, also rather than juust slackening the front subframe ,mounting points, competely remove the r/h side this gives you a lot more room, when reassembling the r/h u,bolt.still a pig of a job but well worth it.

it can be done in place if you have access to a pice of metal pipe, here in Malta we call it conduit pipe, it is used to pass through them the electrical cables in garages and commercial premises, normally thye are 19mm diameter inside ant about 21 on the outer diameter, i posted the diagram and procedure on first or second forum if someone here still has access to them as i forgot the password to login  . the important thing is to remove the small self tapping screw holding the bush in place. hope someone post the link to my original post, saves me having to explain it again

Thanks for all your replies, most helpful. Looks as though I might be able to do it. Also interesting to note that the available bushes are not correct. With the help of that link I should be able to get my mate in the machine shop at work to turn me one up :)

I think the S replica will have to stay off the road ( :( ) until I can get it into my Dads workshop, which is wide enough to position the car so the rack can be taken out if needs be. Currently his workshop is occupied by an engine-less and front suspension-less Wolseley 18/85 Landcrab, which probably won't be mobile again until August time.
