Flasher units
Can anyone recommend a supplier for a mk1 flasher unit? or another more reliable unit to replace it.
Last time I replaced it over 10 years ago, I tried multiple new ones that didn't work then found an old one in a scrap yard.
Also, Ive read that early ones only work on positive earth, Is this correct?
Many thanks in advance.

Re: Flasher units
I take it this is a 3 pin can ?
The Thermal type 'click-click' cans are not polarised.
If you want the same type of can, Hella branded type 3003 are very good. Tridon's TF123 is another but of much lesser quality, though, not the worst.
Not sure that anyone does an electronic type for positive earth.

Re: Flasher units
I fitted an electronic one into an old can type flasher unit, so can use LEDs. Looks 99% original from the outside.

Re: Flasher units
Hella have a few others;- 3024 and 3025.
Another OK-ish brand is Narva, their can P/N is a 68203.

Re: Flasher units
Is it a two or three pin you're after? I may have an odd NOS unipart one kicking around

Re: Flasher units
Useful thread …..just spent a whole day trying to work out why indicators work intermittently, three flasher units, two new one old…..one minute they work…..then they dont.
Are any Mk1 flasher units worth trying, or is solid state hidden in old can the only way to go ?

Re: Flasher units
This is a 3020, which handles slightly higher loads;-

It seems the 3003 are now thin on the ground. I did buy one over the counter only a few months ago.

Not sure if I rightly catch your drift.Exminiman wrote: ↑Tue Apr 08, 2025 9:46 pmCan you wire this for the indicator stalk light ?MiNiKiN wrote: ↑Mon Mar 10, 2025 1:08 pmI used the internals of this one from classic car leds:

The linked flasher unit is more or less a like-for-like replacement (either use 2- or 3-pin option, depending what was fitted to your car). The only thing I did was to fiddle the unit into the old metal case. No wiring change required (unless you have pos. earth - I don't know how to handle this though)

Re: Flasher units
This is a brilliant solution, I look forward to trying this when my original Lucas item gives way. Very pleased also to read in the description that this modern replacement also makes the audible clicking sound! I’m sure by the time you’ve squeezed the guts into an original flasher body, you’d hardly know.I used the internals of this one from classic car leds:

Re: Flasher units
On a MK1 you have the green light on the end of the stalk, this is powered from the P terminal with light green purple wire, does the relay allow for this ?MiNiKiN wrote: ↑Wed Apr 09, 2025 10:21 amNot sure if I rightly catch your drift.Exminiman wrote: ↑Tue Apr 08, 2025 9:46 pmCan you wire this for the indicator stalk light ?MiNiKiN wrote: ↑Mon Mar 10, 2025 1:08 pm

EDIT just called the company and apparently the relay you want for a MK1, so it operates the green tell tale bulb as well is https://www.classiccarleds.co.uk/produc ... 3046057991

Re: Flasher units
I’ve fitted the classic car leds flasher can. Works exactly like the original, no wiring changes needed.
LED indicators are a must in my view. So much brighter. I’ve also added the daylight running/indicator bulbs at the front.
Just need to add a relay to cut the feed to the DRL when the headlamps are on now.
@minikin, how did you get the guts of the modern flasher into the old can?

I removed the plastic housing from the new flasher unit, unfolded the flaring on the tin housing of the old one. The little slots in the bottom needed widening, which I did using a little cut-off wheel in the Dremel. After all not rocket science. I think I glued the new PCB onto the bottom tin lid.
