Cooper S speedos.

Post by Pete »

Right can we just nail down exactly how many different Cooper S speedos they made in all markets with photos to illustrate. I’ve seen a few hooky speedos about recently and I think it’d be good to clarify the subject! As far as I know Ive not seen any repro 120 dead speedo faces it does tend to be the Mk1 130 variety.

These are some for starters, I don't think making a complete list would be very easy.

Just to clarify I’m more referring to specific changes in the speedo face, not necessarily SN numbers or gear changes but happy to be educated on all the above. Were overseas built Ss built with locally made speedos for example or all supplied from Smiths.

I bought this one new in the mid 1980's from Tim Harbour when he was at Metro and Mini Spares in Putney. I've looked up the SN number in the past and I think it's for a 3.9:1 final drive, which by coincidence is what I now run. Hence the lower maximum speed indicator in each gear than a speedo for a 3.44:1 final drive.

Australian Mk2 Cooper S had a locally made speedo. I don’t know if this was all of them or some of them,

The coolant temp and oil pressure gauge were also locally made

I've drawn up a list, did that some time ago. It includes (all) speedo's that were produced by Smiths for the cars that have the centrally mounted large speedo. Out of the 108 different speedos 37 are Cooper S (additional trip speedos listed separately) . Including pictures of each speedo is very difficult as some were made in very low numbers or for very specific purposes, such as the police cars.
Is the list complete? I don't believe so but does cover a large chunk of what was made.
