Grommet problems

Post by 100BUR »

I've got an issue we're the main wiring harness to the ECU, goes through the bulkhead engine bay/ back of speedo without a grommet.

Not what I would call good engineering practice...

I cant pull it back through into the engine bay due to several plugs bigger that the hole the harness goes through.

I have thought about using a small piece of heater hose, making a slit down the length, ,putting it over the harness then cable tie to hold in place, with some neutral silicone around the hole.

Hope that makes some sense.

Any other ideas suggestions most welcome

What type mini is it BUR to have plugs too big to pass through the bulkhead hole? I'd say that idtdefinitely needs some protection, either by the grommet that holds the harness central or like you say....., if not possible, then a piece of protective wrapping as you suggest. Piece of split rubber pipe to protect it gripped tightly with a cable tie top and bottom. Out of sight and out of mind - but SAFELY out of mind

It got in there somehow, and if it’s factory I guarantee it went in made up. However the grommets were fitted to the loom in the factory before the connectors were added.

One option may be to de-pin the connectors that are too large to go though and then rebuild them once the wires are through?

Cut the grommet, then put it over the loom and then force it on the hole in the bodyshell. Then super-glue it back together. No one will ever see it but youve stopped any chance of cutting thru the wiring

If it's got an ECU I assume it is an SPi or MPi. What happened to the original grommet....as I doubt a factory fitted harness would be installed through a bulkhead without a grommet and still pass final quality control inspections (even in BL/Rover!). As said above grommets are fitted to wiring harness/looms before the connectors are added. Is the grommet maybe out of sight and been pushed too far through the bulkhead hole to the other side? (The MPi bodyshell has a solid bulkhead behind the dash with no large central hole and earlier Minis (with the Clubman style dash) had a black blanking plate over the hole, with the harness passing through in a large rubber grommet).

Hi Guys thanks for the replies.
Should of mentioned, this is after market work its recently been converted to a 7 port head, with the ECU in the passengers side gloves box area
