Mk1 mini registration number

Post by LeeBee »

Hi all
I was given a mk1 mini a couple of years ago that had lost it's documents/reg number etc.Luckily it had the chassis number/engine number and FE number intact so I found out via another website it was a 1962 Austin Mini Deluxe

Now the problem is the reg number, surely this would have been done at the dealer selling it and not recorded by Gaydon if I buy a Heritage Certificate?

If so and there is no way of finding out the original reg would the DVLA issue an age related reg and would the car need to be on the road for an inspection (they don't want to see it at the moment it's far from roadworthy!)

The car came to me as a rolling shell full of parts, nothing dodgy going on just someone else's abandoned project they had to move as they lost their garage, I just wish they had chucked a number plate in it!!

Thanks
Lee

Have a friend who had the same problem with a box of bits. he was 12th owner in over 45 years. With a bit of negotiation, he got a non transferable age related number

Well what I have seen on forums before it may be a good idea to contact DVLA and see what they say

I might just send off for a dating letter as I have all the info then contact them

At least I didn't instantly get a negative reply saying "I don't think it is a mk1 mini" like on another forum! even though I stated it had the high seatbelt mounting bolts and small rear window etc

Thanks

Getting an age related plate shouldn't be too difficult for the car, no it doesn't need to be on the road and yes get a Heriate Certificate. As for trying to get the original registration number/document, you'd need to exhaust any lines of enquiry with the previous owner of it first and see if he knows the reg number , has any old photos of the car or knows another previous owner who may know the reg, it could even still be registered with DVLA for all you know. If you do find out what it was and it isn't on DVLA'a computer you would still be in with a shot of getting the original registration back (unless it's been grafted onto another car, then it gets a little complicated !) More research needed by the sounds of it...
