Maybe too many auctions. I seem to remember there were a lot less and suspect that a few auctioneers jumped on the band wagon when sales were really buzzing with good commissions to be earned. If prices drop then people will hold on to their good cars and the auction houses will struggle to meet their costs. I just watched the Duxford sale and the auctioneer was most excited when he got a genuine bid! I would be surprised if they covered their venue and staff costs, let alone make a decent profit.
