Reverse gear lock and gaiter ..?
Have a reverse gear lock fitted similar to the MS one https://www.minispares.com/product/Clas ... o%20search
Question is, any bright ideas on how to also fit a rubber gaiter or similar, as you need access to the lock to unlock it……
I was thinking of making an aluminium cover at remote level and doing away with the rubber gaiter
But all other cars look to still be using the rubber gaiter….some how.
Cheers in advance

Re: Reverse gear lock and gaiter ..?
The gaiter is just cut open on the side to operate the lever. It kind of defies the purpose of the gaiter but that’s how it’s done

Re: Reverse gear lock and gaiter ..?
Thanks, that’s what I have, but I want to use the gaiter to isolate the inside from the outside, Maybe a hinged gaiter to do the trick….

We used a cut gator for a while but it wore badly and we were worried it might jam something eventually - this was in the rally car so we took the rubber off.

KAD sell a reverse gear inhibitor which might prevent the need for fitting something in the car and cutting the gaiter. Works well on my car

When I first started racing in the early 90s I bought one of these MS ones. For "spirited driving" they are useless.

I would imagine sat in the driver's seat harness on it would be difficult to reach down and move the reverse lock out the way

Fit a bicycle gear shifter to the gear stick, and operate the reverse lock by bowden cable. Such you can keep the rubber gaiter.Exminiman wrote: ↑Sat Jun 29, 2024 8:57 pm Have a reverse gear lock fitted similar to the MS one https://www.minispares.com/product/Clas ... o%20search

Re: Reverse gear lock and gaiter ..?
For the racing car look you can just cut the gaiter down level with the round housing, so still seals the car.
I find a reverse gear lock is a must for hillclimbing, helps get into 3rd without going in to the reverse gate.
Mini spares one is OK, but seen hand made ones that are more robust.

Re: Reverse gear lock and gaiter ..?
Thanks, this is sort where I started, my reverse lock is very similar to yours as well. When I looked on the internet every other competition car had a full gaiter and I wondered if I was missing something.
Looks like others with full gaiter must be using another method for reverse locks, either KADs stronger detent one or this one http://mk1-forum.net/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=794 where you can keep the full gaiter.

Re: Reverse gear lock and gaiter ..?
I'm still using the reverse gear lock that I made nearly 40 years ago. When the car was used daily and had full interior trim I had the gaiter fitted with a slot cut in it for the lock lever.

Re: Reverse gear lock and gaiter ..?
I "imagineered" something like this: hope that explains roughly what I woul make. The bike brake could possibly be replaced with a more vintage lever of a classic bike (choke or ignition adjuster) from an auto-jumble.BAD942B wrote: ↑Fri Jul 12, 2024 8:29 pmlike some more info on this pleaseMiNiKiN wrote: ↑Wed Jul 03, 2024 9:51 amFit a bicycle gear shifter to the gear stick, and operate the reverse lock by bowden cable. This might help?, it’s an old thread but looks like someone on here designed drew and photographed something similar.
Whether they are still going, not sure, but the photo is still accessible https://mk1-forum.net/viewtopic.php?p=5129#p5129

If you run a KAD quickshift, we also manufacture a modification that does away with the original tension spring and plastic "C" washer.
It comprises of a delrin lower cup which the lever ball sits in, sandwiched by the KAD aluminium housing which is then installed upside down. Shims are inserted to provide perfect movement or adjustment.
Has been faultless in operation all season. We fitted one to Ron Maydon's car when we worked on it prior to his Spa foray and he said it was a vast improvement.
Very nice solution, I too wonder if it is stil available. Mike hast been last seen here in 2013
