67 Cooper 1275 S ?

Post by swilman60 »

I recently inherited a disassembled mini. From talking with my uncle over the years I think it is a 67. Left-hand drive. I know little to nothing about cars in general and Minis in particular. My uncle purchased it in 1979. He had it painted, rebuilt the engine, and purchased hundreds of replacement parts but he never put it back together. Sadly, the chassis plate and the engine plate are missing. I sent the numbers I could find, front end, FE 1045688 and number from the right front footwell, F761496 along with two numbers on the engine, 1P3585 stamped next to the 1275 plate and 12FA11941 on the opposite side of the engine, the the heritage site but they could not provide any further information.

Any ideas? I am having it reassembled and will need some better information in order to get a VIN and title.

Thank you for any help.

Is there a body number on a small welded plate to the left side of the bonnet slam panel (bonnet locking platform) ?

If not you’re up against it to identify exactly which car you have. Pictures might help us identify what the car is, especially boot compartment

I would wait on your "having it reassembled " until you are very sure of just what you have as the DVLA are correctly very strict these days .
Maybe worthwhile to indicate your location as there may be a Forum Member who is local & can advise ;)

The FE number suggests 1965 or 66, but thats all I can say to help.

As I read this topic it seems that members are still being very coy and not revealing an idea of their location. I'm not proposing a post code or zip code but a county or country would be helpful especially to respond to posts like this.

EXACTLY........ I know that I'm being a bit presumptive now, but given my rather limited experience, very few newcomers/first timers come back aftet their initial request for info.....

We had a very similar one from a SINED a couple of weeks ago. Answered and nowt heard since....... And another one from a Mr Smoothie a few weeks ago.

I tried to upload some pictures but they were too large (exceeded allowable data) No plates anywhere. I will work on getting the pictures to be less data intense. Thank you for the help so far.

I use Irfanview (https://www.irfanview.com/) - also easy to use and when you save a Jpg-file you just set its size to 500kb max and tick the box (see the area marked w/ red square in attached picture) . It even has a batch conversion mode for the more experienced, when you want to modify a larger number of pictures at once.

A very easy way to let the picture size shrink to match forum requirements is:

Open the photo on you screen > bring it in the size you prefere > make a screenshot of the window with the photo or just a particular cutout > save it as new JPG. Check the file size. If its too large try again with a smaler frame.

That's it 8-)

Unfortunately that's not going to get you far. That number ..and the similar "FE" plate attached to the left inner guard ... were some sort of stock control numbers relevant to the bits they are attached to... but don't tell you much about the assembled car. There are private data bases that allow some people to roughly date a shell using those numbers.

It has already been suggested that you look for the body number plate. This is a small (say..1 1/2" x 1/2") welded to the bonnet slam panel about a hands width to the left of the bonnet locking mechanism. It's small and thin and usually covered in paint so it blends into the panel. The numbers are lightly stamped and the paint usually needs to be removed so that they can be read.

However.... this number was recorded in the factory ledgers and can be used to identify your car.

North Carolina?? Interesting ... I was visiting friends there about 2 months ago...

Cheers, Ian
