UK flooding

Post by 360gts »

Just thought I'd ask if any members affected by the flooding over there.
Saw on BBC world news....looks pretty bad. I know the media like to dramatize things like this, however, it does look bad and there is some really cold weather arriving..

Hey Dermott, aren’t the media just great!
Yes, there has been gallons of rain for what seems like weeks, but the river levels near me (West Yorkshire) have been higher before, a lot higher, in some cases twice as high! I live on the moors and the land around us is saturated. Any rain runs right off!
I think there may have been a warning further south than us in Bath or Bristol.
I stopped watching the news three years ago when it became apparent it was all part of a bigger agenda…

Although its feels like its rained all year ;) here in Cumbria its pretty much 'normal' winter weather, which is to say pretty damn miserable, but without rain there's not much chance of having a 'Lake District'..
Lakes and rivers are full as expected at this time of year.

And also don't get me started on the medias obsession with naming every bit of weather that rolls in across the atlantic and constant weather warnings!
Wanna see what I'm playing with? Youtube Channel
Caution ;) may contain 8 Ports, Xe's and VTec's, I don't do standard!

Thames near Marlow (Buckinghamshire) is 4 feet higher than normal based on the depth gauge at a local lock. Normally it's around 7' 2" there but a day or two ago was running at 11' 5" ... and rising!

There was a flood relief system put in a few years back around Maidenhead where the roads running by the river always flooded .. that helped Maidenhead but just pushes the problem further down stream!

Midlands has been hit hard around Nottingham (River Trent).

Problem has been new builds on flood plains .. has been for years and no-one will realise that the land is flat there for a reason.
The forerunner of the Mini .. the A35 .. lots of similarities except rear wheel drive. My engine contains a lot of Mini parts now and the bodyshell some Metro brake parts!

A friend’s wife parked her Mini in the Wallingford riverside car park for the day on Thursday and when she got back found this ……….

She went back on Saturday to see if the flood water had receded .…. :o

Now this all over the local press and all she is worried about is if she is going to get a parking penalty.

Try watching the GB News channel which gives a much more balanced view with opinions on the left & right of politics given a voice, unlike the BBC/Sky/ITV/Channel 4 news which all only give the liberal left/woke agenda on news topics. Personally I don't mind any media channels that are paid for by advertising constantly preaching their agendas but I do object to being forced to pay the TV licence to fund the BBC telling me what I should say or think (not to mention paying Gary Lineker £1.35m a year). Sadly the days when the BBC was a respected news broadcaster with a duty to deliver impartial, accurate news coverage have long gone... :(

In spite of the drama queen BBC...still looks horrible there.
We are also going to experience a really cold Siberian Low...here is the 5 day forecast....this is even cold for us hardy Canucks.
Top temps is the daily high...the lower is the overnight.

-35! I assume thats Celcius? I work for the Australian Antarctic Division and its a lot warmer than that at most of our stations at the moment. Yes, its summer down there, but even so!

This drone video might give non-UK folks an idea of what it's like near the Thames a couple of days ago -

Flood plains are a different matter, but very often roads are under water in our neck - but then clearing/digging out the ditches seems to be a thing of the past...

Yet I've not experienced snow as bad as it was in 1977.

Much of Iran was buried under snow in 1972.

It's called 'weather'. Sometimes it's nice, sometimes it's shite.
