The tax liability will eventually creep in but I cant see how HMRC could possibly investigate and administrate this overnight.
They will prioritise those with a big turnover first and that aren't declaring numbers to HMRC. That in itself would take a monumental amount of time and then they would have to try to work backwards. But I imagine it will be a like a leaky bucket.
Cash and boot/trunk sales might see a resurgence for the next couple of years. Might revive the social element too.
I bet the once untouchable Ebay are crapping themselves as I bet a lot of people will bottle it in the short term.

Bingley and Beaulieu should be a lot more fun this year.

What happens if you have say half a dozen ebay accounts
Assume £1000 sales will be watched per account ?
Or will it be by name on the account. ?
Or people will just have account's in their name and their spouse's name and even the kids names
People will always find a way round
The best repairs go un-noticed

Funny how GDPR is not a factor when government is involved until you want info from them.

Seems this is not new, HMRC has been collecting online selling data since 2010 using a BAE systems designed computer system called “Connect”. :o.

…………and as was touched on earlier, with HMRC you are effectively guilty until you can prove yourself innocent… :(

After the Post Office’s successful scam in obtaining hundreds of millions of pounds from poor unfortunate sub-postmasters under false pretences, it wouldn’t surprise me if HMRC started using the tried and tested money grabbing Fujitsu Horizon programme 🤬

And long may if continue to be so.
It’s very important that we all keep using it, in the same way they force us to “bank online” then close the branches because “nobody comes in now”, if people continue to use cards and apps because it’s convenient then before you know it’ll be “nobody uses cash anymore”….
Ever heard of a CBDC?

And don’t get me started on how we’re being forced to “self checkout”….
