Anyone with any real enthusiasm for old cars will buy a nice original. There are still some left.
The moment you open the door and the whiff of 55-60 year old carpet and vinyl hits you. The imperfections that come with age and the less than perfect build quality from people mostly now long dead. The seat the original buyer sat in. That's what old cars are about.

But values remained stable if not increased through two recessions that I can remember so the current depreciation is definitely new.Peter Laidler wrote: ↑Tue Dec 05, 2023 4:21 pm There's another point too Pete. And anyone with more money than sense buys these heartless over-restored candy sticks for concours only. Each to their own.

Re: New mk1 cooper s
I bought my first classic mini as my third car at 18 years old. At 14 while riding home on school bus I saw a Cooper S pull out of a driveway. I got off the bus at next stop and walked back to the house. Waiting on the porch a lady came out and told me her husband worked second shift and would be very late returning. Seeing my first mini had a profound effect on me. For my 74th birthday I completed a very detailed resto of a 90 Rover Cooper I bought in Jan of this year. As I closed the bonnet and stepped back, I realized the coolest little cars I have ever seen still do something special for me. I don't like to think of us as old. But if I'm still hooked after 60 years it was never about investment. I do try to buy only Cooper related cars or Supers and UK Mokes. When we the mature owners and lovers are gone, I fear for the future of our little cars. Steve (CTR)

Re: New mk1 cooper s
Let’s not forget the mini scene isn’t just about mk 1 minis. Think it was Pete who rightly said there is a shift to 70s and 80s cars . There is , but there’s plenty of minis made up to 2001 . I’ve had a few sportspack MPI minis and there great little cars . I bet minispares and the others sell most of there parts to later mini owners . Just a thought! … Shirley

Re: New mk1 cooper s
I think the key is the interest rate, while it was stupidly low, classic cars were a good bet, it was pointless leaving it in the bank or investing in anything interest related. Now the interest rates have risen the speculators ( not enthusiasts) are leaving the market for better bets……leaving the classic car enthusiasts.Pete wrote: ↑Wed Dec 06, 2023 12:31 amBut values remained stable if not increased through two recessions that I can remember so the current depreciation is definitely new.Peter Laidler wrote: ↑Tue Dec 05, 2023 4:21 pm There's another point too Pete. I have to say I have little interest in anything post 1980 and absolutely zip in 12 inch wheel stuff, Mayfairs, Rover Coopers.
Ten inch wheels, centre speedo is a proper Issitgonnawork? Mini to me.
It's the same with air cooled Beetles - it has to be a 6 volt flat screen torsion bar version.
