Restored Mk1 shell value?

Post by tintoptom »

Hello

I have a 1967 mk1 850 shell that was restored and painted many years ago (early 2000s I think). It has had the beginnings of some conversation to an earlier full skirt dry shell. It has doors bonnet and boot lid restored and painted. The restoration was done well but as it’s been stored so long it’s not perfect. I imagine when it does get used it’ll be blasted and painted to suit the project anyway.

So, what do you reckon is roughly the going rate? Obviously you’d want to see it to put an accurate price on it, but what do you think the ball park value might be?

Cheers!

You're dead right...... There are a few forumers in the throes of looking to re-shell a suitable donor car. But they'll need to SEE what you've got before they offer an opinion. Especially as you say that the metalwork is sort-of done but suffering from what sort of long storage.

Photos would help.

Agree with Peter. Definitely needs a handful of decent pictures and some detail. Values will largely depend on the standard of welding and panel fit.
I would have thought a MK1 shell would be a fairly saleable item though

Thank for the replies!

I’m in Horsham in West Sussex 👍

Pics will be an issue as it’s currently buried in a storage unit 😅

I’ll see if I can post some up soon - in the meantime, what’s a ball park for a mk1 shell like this?

In the past I’ve seen good original shells (no wielding required just paint and rebuild) for £7 - £8 K but that was a few years ago.

Would excellent one go for say £10k? A good one with very little work for £7k?

What do you think?

Is it just a shell, or is it a 'car' (ie with documents)?
I'll not get involved in the discussion on value, but I could be very interested in buying if the decided price is something I could afford

It depends on the quality of the restoration,
A heritage shell is over £14,500 now..

Wow. Wow.
Off on a tangent as usual and thinking back to the post about the cost of a full body respray then add strip & reassembly in the event of a major accident may suggest that we all reassess our insured values.
Way back in the late 1990s early 2000s I think I recall accident damaged Rover Minis were stripped and rebuilt into new shells readily available from Rover as it was cheaper than panel repair..
Not forgetting historical value of car for insurance value. Bit like replacement value - like for like - in House policies.
As I stated at the beginning - WOW.

I wonder if insurance companies would actually be more likely to write these cars off nowadays as opposed to repair them as repair costs have gone up and values of the cars has gone down. Makes valuing anything pretty tricky now in the very weird ‘new normal’ world we now live in . A new Mk1 bare shell might be over £14k inc Vat but a very decent completely restored Mk1 850 is not a whole lot more to buy outright.
Lots of those shells go to new race car builds nowadays because racers prefer brand new clean metal, which I can totally understand.

Slightly off topic, I recently had a site inspection from the insurance company that’s trying (badly) to reinstate my house.
We were talking about the amount spent on the property and they said it would have probably have been easier and quicker to knock it down and start again.. apparently that’s what there doing with a few subsidence properties at the moment where possible ..

I think the car repair cost are so high taking into account higher vehicles etc it’s easier to right them off and send them to salvage auction.

As for shell prices I have an excellent original 64 shell that I’m still struggling to decide what to do with, I’ll be interested to see what people value this shell at when we get some pictures..

Everything is skewed in the current climate, i.e. values are dropping like a lead balloon by all accounts. A shell with no docs, that has sat rusting in a barn is probably not £10k, but you might be in the ballpark of £7k, for someone who really NEEDS one. Only way to know is chuck it on ebay with loads of pics and a reserve.

I tend to agree with the above comment.

A value on an unseen shell is a "how much is a piece of string" sort of question.

Pictures would be a great help.
