subframe swap mk4 to mk1

Post by mniwagn »

Mk4 shell, can I bolt up mk1 front subframe just by drilling a few holes? Was there ever any tubes inside the bulkhead on the mk1-3 to keep the 4 5/16 bolts from crushing the bulkheadoutside thanks

Yes, there is strengthening within the bulkhead cross member for the bolts.

I think the rear legs on early subframes also foul the floorpan on later 'shells - I could be wrong

Surely it would be easier to use the correct subframe ?

Yes you can do it, we did it when re-shelling a 1275 GT back in 1980. We drilled the 4 holes through both upper and lower sections of the cross-member after very careful measuring, then drilled the top holes larger and inserted tubes that were cut so that when resting on the inner surface of the lower section, they were flush with the top surface.

The car was well used over the years and was ony sold last year, no problems with the subframe location.

Any problems with the toe panel area? What all is in the cross member?
