Clutch Stop adjustment measurement.

Post by tweedy998 »

Hi all,

I've recently moved house and have misplaced my Haynes manual, I've just been tinkering about with the clutch arm adjustment and setting to the 0.060 in as recommended in my original Morris Cooper 998 Drivers Handbook has the clutch pedal bite point virtually at the floor. I've seen a figure of 0.020 in bandied about on the internet... Which should I be setting it to? Cheers Ed.

Ed, 998 would be .020".
If you still have travel issues....the problem is usually in the arm. Wear in the pivot area...or most common problem is the arm itself...the small ball at the end of the arm suffers from extreme wear. This will increase the travel distance of the arm.....resulting a very low 'bite' point.....even when you have .020" clearance.
Check the large stop nut as well.....
Cheers

The most overlooked wear point is the plunger itself.

The ball on the arm wears, but also where it contacts the plunger is also prone to wear, effectively doubling up the lack of travel.

Both can easily be repaired with some weld and careful filing back to shape.

Worth the effort :) just carefully weld and then file it until you got nice shape and fit ! I took the advice from Andrew while back ;)

Thanks all! I've whizzed out and just re-set it. The clutch is actually working very well, the tinkering is more to get to the bottom of a new noise when the clutch pedal is depressed, I think it's the release bearing getting a bit noisy. It's very slight.

What did worry me slightly when looking at the large nuts on the plunger is the amount of play fore and aft rotation (not in and out) in the plunger, I don't recall there being so much movement in this...

There is a fair amount of rotational movement on the plunger due to the conical shape of the opening to the hole that the arm ball fits into.
