Why is it that makes me smile so much 👍👍😁😁
Maybe it’s because it has bugger all to do with clean air and a lot to do with indirect taxation …..

I suggest riveting your exempt number plates to your vehicle and take a photo of them on your vehicle locally. Forget double sided sticky back tape.

Londoners buy up classic cars to dodge Sadiq Khan’s Ulez expansion.
Londoners are taking to classic cars as a way of dodging Sadiq Khan’s Ulez charge.
"Dealers say they have witnessed a surge in interest as the capital braces for the £12.50 charge to expand to cover all 32 boroughs next week, while older cars selling online are being advertised for their exemption status.
Cars manufactured before 1983 qualify as “historic vehicles” and do not need to pay the Mayor’s clean air levy to drive in London. They can also be registered for an exemption from vehicle tax.
Merlin McCormack, owner of Duke of London, a vintage car dealership in Brentford, said it was “ironic” that some of his customers buying more affordable classic cars were doing so because they are Ulez-exempt, despite the vehicles being more polluting than modern counterparts.
He said: “We sell a lot of entry level classic cars as well as high end stuff. A lot of what we sell is very driveable early 80s [and] late 70s and where they are [Ulez] exempt a lot of customers are looking to buy that as their sole London car.”
He added that Ulez was now a deciding factor for most of his customers who drive in London.
Reselling and auctioneer website Car & Classic currently has several vehicles listed for sale in and around London advertising that they are exempt from the Ulez charge, such as a 1970 Hillman Imp Super for £9,500 and a 1972 Austin Mini for £20,000.
Transport for London allows for a rolling 40-year window that currently permits Ulez exemptions for cars manufactured in the early eighties."

This is being reported on some of the internet news sites as well.

I assume that the only reason that cars older than 40 years are exempt is because they have calculated there is not many of them and they will be driven occasionally and so the impact on air quality will be small.

If the number of 40 year old cars increases, they may well argue the volume of older cars is bad for air quality and charge for them…..or ban them.

He is determined to get his ULEZ tax one way or another……

Not good thing for genuine classic cars enthusiasts within the Ulez zone.

TfL London - Project 2030 next generation road use charging (RUC) platforms.
"London was first with Contactless and the Congestion Charge and is now looking to lead the way in introducing a new, more sophisticated type of road pricing. Join TfL now and make this happen. Help us build the next generation road use charging (RUC) platforms. All being built in the cloud."

Interesting plan

Lets face it, in the end his plan is virtually no cars on the road in London by 2030, the roads will be used for automatic (ed) public transport and cycling and skipping.

All personal vehicle movements to be charged by the mile automatically.

This ties in with the “15 minute City” idea https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/15-minute_city. which effectively creates a small town or village within a city, so that everything, work, Doctors, shopping etc…is all within 15 minutes of where you live.

They can then “ reclaim” the streets and get rid of cars….. other cities are looking at this as well.

I believe this has been on the agenda for quite a while, especially inner London. The inner London boroughs have had loads on money pumped into them and some are now surprisingly nice, leafy areas to live. The areas have been planned with a focus on local living and not cars….

Personally, I think the “The 15 Minute city” idea has lots of merits, unfortunately, its been highjacked by the anti car lobby, the conspiracy theorists, the pro car lobby see it as toxic etc….so any rational debate is now gone…. :(

Useful Map below showing the London ULEZ camera locations.
Active cameras are shown in red.
Missing/damaged cameras are shown in black.

Julie's ULEZ Map:-
http://tinyurl.com/JulieULEZmap

In spite of numerous requests, TfL is refusing to disclose the location of the cameras. (So much for FOI)
The aim of this page is to crowd-source the location of cameras across the zone.

So chaps
What’s a good ulez compliant car for under £5000, less than 10 years old and preferably something that can cope with high mileage?

I've a 2004 HONDA HR-V VTEC 4WD, which is compliant, carries lots of mini spares in the back too ;-)

Here's a low mileage example. The only serious rust they tend to suffer from is the rear of the sills, due to a weird plastic oversill design.

Not less than ten years old, but a ULEZ compliant straight-six petrol 3-series, or 5-series. Occasional E90 330i comes up at around £5k with low mileage. M Sports command more money, SEs less so.

Good luck with that.

Avoid old German crap as it will be pissing oil and coolant out in between various mechanical and electrical dramas.

The last decent BMW and Mercedes stuff was built 25 years ago.

As ever, look to Toyota/Lexus.

I wouldn't rule out Toyota or Lexus either, but every car has its issues. Unsure about recent engines, but the only oil leak I've had on the M50 onwards straight-six BMW petrol is a rocker cover gasket.

M50 and M52's were okay. After that they were made to run hot for emissions which cooks the rubber seals, hoses etc. Anything since then is renowned for leaks. Oil filter housing gasket, vanos solenoid seals, cam cover etc.

After that is the N Series beginning in 2001, N for Nightmare. Don't even think about N43 four cylinder petrols.

This however is ULEZ compliant. Looks a pleasant enough thing and unlike later crap, should prove hardy - and won't lose money.

£1500. Why pay more?

Funny though how the Police can turn out to stand around watching some TfL guys scrape stickers off their ULEZ enforcement vehicle but don't bother to turn out if your house is being burgled or your car stolen in London..

Politicians, you could not make it up....!

Ukraine, desperately in need of all the help it can get from its western allies in its fight for survival against Putin’s Russia, has been denied a fleet of older vehicles that had been surrendered by Londoners hoping to escape the mayor’s punitive daily charge on those who can’t afford newer cars.
If London doesn’t want them, we could make good use of them, said Ukraine. And so it could, if only London Mayor Khan had been willing to release them. But his commitment to his beloved Ultra-Low Emissions Zone (Ulez) trumped his claimed support for the besieged eastern European country, and so the vehicles will be destroyed instead of aiding the fight against Russian expansionism.
Now we discover that while he was pontificating about the virtue of Ulez and dismissing poorer Londoners’ worries about having to pay up to £250 a month for the privilege of driving their cars, he was happy to promote an industry that is blamed for more carbon emissions than any other – in exchange for free business class transatlantic flights. “We don’t want more flights,” said the mayor in June as part of his Greta Thunberg tribute act. But a year earlier, as he prepared to take his seat in the posher seats for his flight to New York, he tweeted that United Airlines are “now flying 22 times a day from Heathrow to the US”.....
