Rear seat wire frame for 63 Cooper
Hello,
Appreciate any assistance I can get on a rear seat question. I have a 63 Cooper that didn’t come with a rear seat when I purchased it. I see that newton commercial now sell a wire frame and they say it’s correct for 1960-1970. I was talking with a friend and their 62 Cooper has a different style rear seat. Can anyone confirm for me what seat back would have been used in Mid 63?
Here is a picture of the Newton Commercial frame.

I do believe the 63 would still have had the wooden top rail....just cannot remember for sure.
The AKD manual will confirm.

If I’m reading the AKD correctly it looks like the wire frame came in at ka2s4 17682.

It depends on month to have or not wire frame..what the build month of your car.
? Seems like middle 63 the transition. So could be still without steel wires.

My Cooper was a July of 63 build. Anyone have pictures of the other style seat back? I have no clue what they even look like.

First picture is the early version, replaced by the wire frame type.

I will try to check when was transition, but... Meanwhile:
If you have still the original shell with no repairs in the rear oarcel shelf, take a picture of the rear parcel shelf. If there are some extra holes near where the seat stands, you had for sure the early type rear seat, as the old seat type was fixed by some screws on the rear parcel shelf.

Thanks for the photos. I don’t have the wood piece and I happen to have a spare wire frame from another car. I think I’ll go with the wire frame and hopefully the rivet counters won’t give me too hard of a time if I got it wrong.

It does have a few holes. They seem to line up with the holes in the wire frame. But maybe someone can confirm by looking at this photo. Appreciate everyone’s help!moita wrote: ↑Wed Aug 16, 2023 3:29 pm I will try to check when was transition, but... Meanwhile:

Yes, that's the correct hole for the bolts. On mine I fitted some longer bolts so I could fit the sound proofing in between the trim and the shell, had to make four spacers to prevent the trim panel being squashed. Not original but better than that fifty year old piece of 'tacky sacking' hanging down into the boot.
