Lightened flywheel
Formulating plans to pep up a stock 998 in my Countryman. Anyone know if there is a lightened flywheel available for the 998. Can't seem to find anything.

Re: Lightened flywheel
Hi Chris.
This is not what you asked but may I suggest that you should consider reading the article from Russell Engineering AU if you are looking for
80 BHP and 80 ftlbs at usable revs.
Had I known, I would have considered it an option in my 1071.

Re: Lightened flywheel
Thanks for the tidbits of info. Had a senior moment of brain fade when measuring the primary gears I have. Indeed the taper end of the crank is the same for every crank. I was measuring the inboard bushing and they are different. 1.625 for 1275 and 1.500 for all the small bore cranks.
That being said, there are many options for a lightened flywheel assembly. My planning continues.

Re: Lightened flywheel
Hi Chris, I'm no expert but I'd be wary of using an ultra lightweight flywheel on a road car. There's a minimum amount of kinetic energy needed to keep the engine ticking over. I don't know what that is but it strikes me that the racing boys are revving all the time because their engines won't tick over because they have really light flywheels apart from other complications. I'm fitting the minispares C-AEG421 flywheel to my 1071. I've no idea how it will behave but it's the least lightened one and I can easily replace it with the original if it doesn’t work. Maybe someone else has some experience with this flywheel. Cheers, Doug.

Re: Lightened flywheel
I've been using a light (8lb) Manx Racing flywheel on my road car for over 30 years.
The only issue has been that the thin ring gear (about half the width of the standard gear) had to be replaced years ago. I think was most likely due to a dodgy starter pinion gear but it was no big deal.
The engine (1330 S basically with a Manx head and a few other bits (inc a 286 cam and a 48IDA at one stage) idles in traffic quite happily - although I do live in the country and so don't sit idling at lights etc...very often.
Works for me...
Cheers, Ian

Re: Lightened flywheel
My Supercharged 999 runs a featherweight flywheel (something like 2.8kg) and it ticks over just fine. Personally, I wouldn't use one on the road, but you could if you wanted. I favour one of these on my road engines.
