Just preparing to re finish the steering rack - would it have been a satin black all over i.e. the inter steel tube and the alluminium ends?

Yep, a micron thickness of satin black over the whole thing including the Mk2 plastic cenrtralisation screw.
I can't tell if the boots were masked up or not as some of the boot clips seem to be RUSTY unpainted metal with the occasional one still clean white metal but others have been painted over. But whatever. underneath the boot, the alloy ends are white alloy
