Re: Dipsticks
Hi Gordon
No, my 63 is a SDL 850
my super is 1-62. I assume they have the same length dip stick, but the blocks have already different casting number between them (62 and 63). But I can confirm my dip stick got 295 mm, from my 63 850 (no plastic tube, just sits on block).
What was observed was on a even earlier block, 59 to 60.. ! That had a smaller dip stick. But maybe someone with early cars can check. But sounds like the right one in Dermot's pic.

Re: Dipsticks
I was talking tot Nuno and he made a very good point. The blocks that ought to have a tube fitted ought to have a larger hole in the cating to accept it. It the block wouldnt have one fitted you will not be abl to fit a tube as the opening is too small.
Having checked documentation, the 997 didn't have the tube fitted up to June 63. My 1071 block from July 63 does accept the tube. Which makes me wonder if all S blocks would have had the tube or if they were intorduced around June / July 63?

Re: Dipsticks
Hi folks, I have an assortment of dipsticks. Bear with me. Old A series 850 - no tube no rubber: 1071 metal tube with rubber: Riley 998 - plastic tube no rubber: A+ 998 no tube with rubber. I also have two others of unknown provenance. All are more or less the same overall length but in all cases the distance from the washer to the MAX is 9 inches. Cheers, Doug.

Re: Dipsticks
Oh yeah, forgot to add, my 68 CooperS and my 66 Cooper both have a metal tube with rubber. Cheers, Doug.

Re: Dipsticks
It was quite common for them to be swapped out as the plastic ones do tend to break / perish. If a tube was fitted to a 1071 / 970 it would have been plastic

Re: Dipsticks
Hi Toby, Hi 360gts, that's interesting. The plastic tube that I have from the Riley block which would be the same vintage as 1071/970 engines doesn't take the rubber seal. It doesn't fit. So those engines wouldn't have had the rubber seal on the dipsticks? Curious, Doug.

Re: Dipsticks
So, having established that I have the correct dipstick and that the max marks are where they should be, does anyone know what the difference in volume is between Max and Min?
