DougR wrote: Fri Jun 23, 2023 7:51 pm Thanks for all the suggestions. Very informative. I'm reluctant to tap the hole as the block is a bit precious. I like the frozen brass plug idea. I found a piece of brass rod but unfortunately it's 1/2 inch. I'll try to find a supplier of 13mm and turn it down. I get the feeling that nobody is a fan of these things although I used them in my 1275 S block and the oil pressure is great. Cheers, Doug.20230623_193703.jpg
Like most things the original rover ones were probably great, these days not so much.

I have used steel type core plugs and 100% reliable…

EBay item… 201201554638
Thanks. Those steel ones are the business all right. I'll grab a few of them. The brass ones I have are from a Rover pack of five. Doug.

KAD do these, NPTF plugs which work at 3/8, you can buy them more cheaply though.

As I understand it the “F” in NTPF related to it being a self sealing taper thread, not requiring sealant for fuel and oil… NTP, being a standard taper thread which requires a sealant.

Not saying it doesn't work without a taper, as I sure it would work, I would jut feel more comfortable sealing it with a tapered thread.

You have to be carful though that the plug dosent protrude into the oil way

Interested to hear other opinions in this.

I use M14 Cup Point Grub Screws for plugs. The 1/2" drilling it the right size for tapping M14.

I tap the block down to the step in the drilling and the Cup Point seats & seals on the step. As added insurance, a dab of Loctite 243 on the threads helps.
