SU Fuel Pump Continuously Running

Post by a_d_jackson »

I fitted an SU Fuel Pump with Electronic Points (AUF214EP) on ignition the pump continuosly runs, the car starts and runs for a few mintues and then stalls. The car will then start again but stall after 30s or so.

I've checked the fuel lines going into and out of the pump and they look fine.
What should I look for next?

Car is a 1965 Austin Countryman, 850 enginer, single SU carb.

Check the carb float needle is sealing. Assuming you’ve got an H/HS carb is there anything coming out the overflow?

Check you’re not sucking in air. Is there a reasonable amount of fuel in the tank?

Was it a new pump? Is the diaphragm ok?

Hi Oneball,

A single HS carb, 3/4 tank of fuel, new fuel pipes in and out of the pump and a brand new pump.
I've double check that the pipes are well connected and the fuel clips are tight.

What is the best way to check the float needle is sealing?

Thanks

To check the float valve is working - take the float bowl lid off, turn it upside down and blow through the inlet pipe. It shouldn’t allow any air through

When it stalls, take off the fuel bowl lid and note the fuel level in the bowl. At least that’d rule out fuel supply as a problem

Check the orientation of the Pump. The outlet neets to be at the very top.

Had similar recently - the fiter on the inlet of the pump was blocked with tank crud (blamed on ethanol), would only let a little fuel through at a time, just enough to start and run for a little bit. Cleaned it out and runs sweet as a nut.

Thanks for all help and suggestions. I’ve fixed the problem, the needle in the float was stuck preventing the fuel flowing. It’s one of the new brass types with a ball bearing. I managed to free the ball bearing but am going to get a replacement. Any suggestions where to get one and are these brass ones known to be problematic?

The best seals (in my experience) are the Viton tipped ones. But in truth, all SU needle valves, or maybe that should be All needle valves have their issue when having fuel from 60 year old tanks pumped through them.

It is just one of those things that happens every now & again.
