SU Carb issue?

Post by smp »

So, I stopped running the engine and a couple of minutes later there was a short "hiss" and I found fuel on the outside of one of the float chambers. I didn't see how it was ejected. Any ideas?(There wasn't a fuel leak while the engine was running)

No, there won't be, because the engine is taking the fuel that's in the fuel bowl. But it seems as though the fuel bowl float is sticking open and the fuel is venting through the escape vent UNDER the little silver/alloy cover - fitted to the inllet tube. As a result, the fuel pump keeps pumping the fuel through

That's my opinion. Could be wrong of course

Craked float chamber? Happened to me once. I had over tightened the bolts holding float chambers. They moved , but the rattle and vibration..New HS4's were they, not a Cooper though.

The new HS4's I had had very thin wall float chambers. Seriously frightened when returning to the pits, lifted the hood and heard ...hss..hss... fuel falling down on to the exhaust manifold. Chemical metal fix and I continued racing, later switched the chamber.

Oh, I'm sorry - the were HS6's.. I think HS4´s maybe be of better construction, more metal on chamber walls?
